.270 wanted

Recommended Posts

Hi mate,

i personally dont like the .270's And my friend that bought one brand new, sold it about a month later....!!!

you'll want something fairly light to lug after reds if your going to hill stalk and this will cause a little more recoil and muzzle flip...

gun's i woul dbe looking at in the range are the tikka t3, browning a-bolt and the sako 85...

it WILL knock your quarry down for sure if you do your part, but i just found it not a nice calibre to shoot personally...

Those that have a .270 on here may advise better than myself but this is just my opinion...

if your open to calibre choice i'd look at the good ol .308, 6.5x55se, and the 7mm-08 a very good calibre...

hope you get sorted out ....

There are a lot of cheap .270's out there, it is an unfashionable calibre at the moment. Personally I find them a bit kicky and barky after using my 6.5x55, but they are damned effective.

If you can afford the Sako, consider the Kimber too. But there is nothing wrong with the X bolts, at the moment I think they have the edge on the Tikka's, but you would not be disappointed with either.

I have just been granted a variation to own a 7mm-08, I prefer them to the .270, but there is not much in it.

hi flyie would moderating it help with this?

the 6.5 x 55 seems very popular might look further into this one!

thanks kind regards

I have to say I do like the .270. It's such a versatile round, and if you are semi decent then you'll put your quarry down fast.

Yeah, a bit of a thump in the shoulder, but if you mount properly that's not a problem. I'm on warfarin and have never suffered any bruising form a .270!

Another one to consider is the .243. A fast, flat round with good range and does the job!

thanks mat_hooks,

not to many people seem to like it to much these days. .243 would be a good option but i need .270 minimum. i get a night shooting license from deer comission and it states .270 minimum for night shooting!

kind regards P

Hi Peep's

I own a Browning A-Bolt .270 and have not got a bad word to say against it, it has never let me down, i would say go for it thumbs.gif

I shoot everything with it Red's, Roe's, Foxes, Rabbit's, Maggpie's, Crow's, anything that the owner of the estate want's shot,

and it,s very accurate i use 110gr Balistic Tip's on Foxes and vermin, and 130gr spbt on Deer, all home loaded.

At the target i get under 0.5" @ 100yard's on both 110gr and 130gr and does ok for me, hope this help's you.

Peeps, i am sure moderating would help, just the same as it does with every other larger calibre. But as I say the .270 is not popular and there are some real bargains out there.

a night shooting license from deer comission

It can be done but you have to apply for permission and have good reason.

yeh treacle trackpad is correct. you can also get a "follow on license" which allows the you to follow the deer onto a niegbours land up to 1 mile! the way things are shaping up i will have one of these to this year. we have big red deer issues at one of my places have had for many years the deer commission come see us regularly do an assesment of numbers, damage caused, cull numbers and are very helpfull. its not our 1st choice to kill them in numbers but its last option really! we are deemed to have "good reason" as the deer only come on at night leave by dawn.

my old .270 is now shot out. My RFD was trying to talk me out of .270 "very unpopular these days"??... "its old school"??. thought i would ask about and get some other opinions. he seems to be genrally correct but i still like it. will have a look about before i decide.

thanks for all the reply's

regards P
