johnboy19 38
Right, before you read on, im hoping you dont find this post to boring, as the only shot fired was when i unloaded my gun at the end of my mooch, anyway........... On Sunday I went round to an old ferreting permission i've not been to in a wee while to ask if the farmer would let me on with my air rifle, and his reply was 'shoot away son', result. So i decided to go up for a walk around tonight. Before i went there, i went round to the stables my sister keeps her horse as their fields neighbour the other fields i have just been given permission on, to ask if i could go from that permission onto their land and the woman said yes. There is a small cottage next to the stables, with a small field that is jumping with rabbits. The woman who lives in the cottage is in a home but her son walks the dogs on the fields every day. I put a letter through the door last week but he never got back to me, oh well. Anyway i asked the woman who runs the stables if they ever get much rabbits coming from the cottage, onto their field, and she said she sees loads on her field at night and said i can shoot there, so i think some lamping is in order for this one So i drove round to the farm and asked if the farmer was in, as i was wanting to see if he had signed my permission slips etc. His wife answered and told me they have not looked at them yet as they have had other stuff to worry about, turns out their son had an accident on a tractor and has broken his back. I never really new what to say, just said i was very sorry to hear that etc, and was just going to go home as i didnt want to pester them. But she told me that the farmer was round the back if i wanted to speak to him. Found him and quickly asked if i could take a walk around and he said yes. Didnt get a chance to ask about boundaries etc so just kept to where i had been ferreting. I was really just going for a walk about to se what was happening, and took the gun just incase any opportunities arose. I wasnt sure what to expect as we had taken quite a lot of rabbits from here with the ferrets, with the last outing giving quite poor numbers. Not long after i got there, a large hawk was circling above me making a lot of noise, so i didnt think i would see much, i honestly think it was following me about lol. I spotted something in the distance which i thought was a rabbit, so i jumped onto the other side of the burn and walked up closer, had another look and couldnt see it that well, decided it wasnt a rabbit, jumped the fence, and as soon as i landed, it bolted! turns out it was a rabbit lol. Continued up the tree line and seen something moving about yards or so away. Moved slowly up the treeline, looked through the scope and seen it was a young rabbit. Just kept moving slowly up, and it never even moved. I managed to get about 35 yards from it, but this is about 5 yards outside the distance i am confident shooting to, and it ended up bolting. It bolted onto my other permission, so i went over for a look about and seen about another 4 or 5 rabbits running about, promising Decided to head back to the car. Looking around all the burrows i passed, there was a lot of evidence of rabbit activity and i have found a few sniping spots so its looking good. Had a quick chat with the farmer. Asked if there was any times he wouldnt want me around or anywhere he didnt want me to go, he said i could come whenever i want and said it was fine for me to come lamping at night There seems to be quite a lot of crows about aswell. He already has people shooting there but says he hasnt seen them in a while. Decided to go round to the stables to see if there was any rabbits in the field and sure enough there was a few running around. So all in all it was a good night, nothing in the bag, but it got me up off my arse for the night and it looks promising for the future. i have a lot to learn and think it will take me at least a few visits before i suss it all out and get some in the bag, but im looking forward to all of it Lets just say im a 'happy bunny' Cheers John Quote Link to post
Phantom 631
Very Nice going John I always take at least a few shots at a zero card, that way I can say I at least fired the gun! Comming away without anything in the bag is normal especially when 1st starting out. I had 3 trips before I had my 1st bunny Sorry to hear of the lads accident as well, Farm workers have one of the highest professional accident rates in the UK Many are killed simply because the machinary is so dangerous. I know exactly how you felt though, not knowing what to say to people upon bad news. I was in Morrisons yesterday and saw a woman working there, who I'd not seen in over 10 years. Asked her how she was etc... Then I asked her about her sister Vickie how was she (she used to model for me when she left school) one of the most alluring faces you could possibly imagine Jenny told me that she died five years ago I was so shocked and of course I didn't know what to say. So beautifull and she left 2 children as well. Very sad. Anyways, I'm really happy that you have the land to let your baby loose on and I'm looking forward to hearing of your exploits and as always....... DONT FORGET THE CAMERA Phantom Oh it wasn't a boring post either Quote Link to post
