john robbo 30
Earlier today I was asked to explain (in laymans terms) what calibres are and there MAIN uses. So here is my attempt. I am aware they are not all there and neither are all bullet weights this is just a guide for novices and anyone with an interest. So I thought it may have some use here as well. Regards John. With some calibres they are .000 this is point of an inch bore size Metric is 000mm which is easier to understand. Anyway here goes, calibre followed by main target species, followed by bullet weights in grains(COMMON HUNTING WEIGHTS) .17 HMR...... SMALL GAME.17-20GR .22 LR..... SMALL GAME.32-40GR .22WMR....SMALL GAME.30-50GR .22 HORNET.....SMALL GAME/FOX.35-45GR .17REM....FOX17-32GR .204.....FOX25-36GR .222/.223.......FOX/SMALL DEER.40-69GR .22250/.22 SWIFT.....LONG RANGE FOX/SMALL DEER.40-69GR .243WIN......FOX/ALL DEER.55-107GR .2506REM....FOX/ALL DEER.75-120GR 6.5MM/.260......FOX/ALL DEER/MOOSE.85-160GR .270WIN.....DEER/PIG/MOOSE.90-150GR 7MM/.280...DEER/PIG/MOOSE/BEAR.100-175GR .30/7.62.....DEER/PIG/MOOSE/PLAINS GAME.110-220GR 8MM......LARGE DEER/PIG/BEAR/PLAINS GAME.150-220GR 9.3MM....PIG/PLAINS GAME/LARGE BEAR /DANGEROUS ANIMALS.232-325GR .375.....AFRICAN GAME.270-300GR .400+....ELEPHANT/RHINO/ETC.400-500GR THERE ARE MANY MORE BUT THESE ARE THE MOST COMMON IF A CARTRIDGE IS FOLLOWED BY MAG OR MAGNUM IT HAS USUALLY MORE CASE CAPACITY (MORE POWDER) SO MORE POWERFUL. Good effort No doubt someone will jump in soon to try and show they know something you don't lol ! ME! ME! It's worth noting that calibre by dictionary definition is the internal diameter of the barrel. British and Continental practice is to measure across the lands, American across the grooves. The trend now is to cite external diameter of the bullet. .308 is the same caliber as NATO 7.62, and .22 WRM,.22 Hornet, .222, .223, 22-250, .220 Swift and 5.56 all fire the same diameter bullet, standardised at .224". Chamberings of course are different in each case, except 5.56 and .223. Then .243, 6mm, .240 Weatherby all fire the same diameter bullet. Confusion worse confounded now I fear, because it is only relevant to handloaders, but I couldn't resist getting my two pennorth in! Interesting list, and you obviously put some thought in.
