retriver help needed!

ive got a 6 month lab pup thats doing really well but when i roll him a retrive, (not making him sit or anything)the problem is as simple as when i roll the ball he runs, picks it up, and then tries to either run away with it (i made an enclose traning bit of the garden to stop this) or he just sits down with it and chews the tennis ball. he dose it well in the run of his kennel but when i try it in the "traning patch" it all goes to pot!

he gets lots of fuss and a biscit if he comes back, but when it gose wrong i call him, get down on my knees, ive even lied down, the usual clap the hands offer a biscit but he just dosent bother.

 

ANY help would be great!

Have you thought about using a gundog trainer? who can see whats he upto help sort your pup out. I'd give up on the treat idea , he only take advantage of that.Labs ar greedy so and so especially pups..

This is a good idea. Another technigue is to back away from him when he picks up the ball and looks at you. This may prompt him to run towards you with the ball.

 

But, six months is still pretty young. If he's chewing alot he may still be teething. If thats the case. You might, work on other things for a while. Remember, the recall really has to be hammered home before retrieving will begin to blossom. There is plenty of time so don't worry. taking him out for a romp before you train will help burn off some of that playfulness. Otherwise keeping training session short and break them up throughout the day will see you through.

Just an idea that worked with my lurcher, tie a long string like a washing line to his collar and pull him in a couple of times with the ball. Then instead of pulling him all the way just give a quick tug and he'll come expecting you to pull him in. Worth a try. I was in the same position and it worked a treat! Good luck.

he wandered up to me but only around 4 feet away, ill try incoraging him when hes close to me... might work!

Hi Rob Bob to be honest he is still young i wouldnt worry to much you know he retreives ,it just needs tidying up go on to a dummy rather than the ball, a ball rolls more fun to keep a dummy doesnt I would carry on with his basic training heel ,sit ,stay throw dummies around him etc leave the retreiving for a couple of weeks. If you want more help I take a gundog training class in Dunfermline on sunday mornings pm me for details.
