I've never found them anything but easy, they are as natural minded as you will find in any dog so pack struture is massively important to them.

 

I've always used very similar methods as Cesar Milan uses with the salukis and found they are so in tune with this way of thinking.

 

I am from a Gundog background but I completly threw away that mindset from getting a feeling for my first Salukis ways.

 

 

bang on the money Mark imho, 'Ceasar's Way' all the way, really works with saluki,unlike traditional training methods, I've not had the pleasure of reading many books about saluki as yet, but when it comes to training and living with them knowledge of pack leadership is essential as is a calm assertive demeanour, Jan Fennel's 'The Dog Listener' explains Amechian Bonding and how to implement pack leadership in a much clearer way than Mr Milan's books(again only my opinion) either writers works are worth reading prior to buying a saluki, there methods can even turn around older damaged dogs with very quick progress evident if you stick to the routines, best money I ever spent to be honest

good reply mark ,what you like at training unicorns ? lol im joking mark ..people as has been recorded have been hunting with these hounds for thousands of yers very sussesfully they aint mythical beasts ..but do respond better to the carrot than the stick !!

Not meaning to sound big headed in saying that but is just how I find them.

 

Getting back to books The Saluqi; Coursing Hound Of The East, Edited by Gail Goodman but with section written by many Salukis Enthusiasts from around the world many gathering their experiences in the Middle East.

 

 

lol you forgot to mention the price of said esteemed book!! mind I would love a copy one day

I totally agree though it depends what your carrot is as to whether it will work.

 

9 times out of 10 Salukis are difficult because their very most basic need are not being met, once that prey drive, natural intelligence and energy kicks in you simple have to get them out running/hunting/learning, only then can you expect them to toe your line.

 

They are simply not anywhere near as forgiving as other modern/western breeds if you don't meet these basic needs they will give you the finger, use harsh forceful methods and they will tools down and totall shut you out and you will loose any bond that you had. That is not to say you can't be firm quite the opposite really as many saluki are naturally highly dominant (contray to what people think), but you must always be fair.

 

Simple really.

Ive trained others, but always find it different to a saluki X.

we have a big saluki x and it has taken us 3 years to really understand him, my son has put an awful lot of time in with him and far from being stupid he is a a great hunter using his nose as good as the gun dogs, we are doing some pest control tomorrow i will write it up and put some pics on

Im also training a beddy grey, and they are 2 different kettles of fish.

 

The beddy been eager to please, the salukiX been much more laid back.

I have my first ever saluki and was expecting more of a challenge from her but I must admit I didnt really do anything with her but bring her out in the field and things just fell into place over a period of months.I also have the kelpie X and compared to her she was not in the same planet at all,I copped on after a bit she looked on things quiet differently and just learnt for herself.After having her out and about I really enjoyed her drive and determaination and hope in the future to have another.All she ever wants every now and again is a kind word and a good gallop after a very fast prey in front of her and shes happy

its not in the u/k but its a sand pit so the dogs had no problems just soft sand

Interestingly I find my Salukis far more eager to please me, I just don't seem hold the same importance to the beddies as I do to the Saluki at least once outside that is, the beddies are just not interested in pleasing me they have their own agenda where as I am quite literally my Salukis world.

I can see your point, yes, the beddy does do her own thing, but seems to respond easier, thats where I am going wrong(I think)

i am not harsh with either, but am firm with both, the saluki will come first, but if tyhe beddy sees she is returning to my side, she races to beat her.

 

The things i find hard to get to grips with is the retrieve, sit stay.

 

So my approach needs to be different with both.

finding the right balance with the salukiX should be my way forward.

I am calm so they wont feel the tension(if you know what i mean.)
