Timid Toad 18
thats the attitude to take take your dog in if you want to show him and if you win all well and good if you lose so what you took part and put some money in the coffers of the hunt who are running the shows for them to keep going and to those who complain about the shows and the fact they dont win i dont see no one twisting your arm to force you into the ring
boyo 1,398
fence hopper your wrong not all show winners are just good looking lots do work as well . a pup i bred won 13 out of fourteen puppy championships and was worked harder than a lot of lurchers day and night got through to a puppy coursing final as well . the real type not lure coursing . ended up being retired at just over 2yr old from bad coursing injury . she was a stunning looking bitch but at the end of the day i bred her for work and that is what she did the fact that she was a stunner to look at was just a bonus . and remember worker or just show dog their owners put money in the coffers through gate entry and the ring so the show organisers dont really care as long as they get a good turnout to help the club or charity . staffiedownwest 6
A very interesting read. I have been both sides of the "ropes" or all three if you count the working side of things. I have had the pleasure of owning all sorts of lurchers in 13 years, from the "proper" working collie cross, to the very showy whippett/grey/deerhound cross. I organise a charity dog show and I know how hard the decision is to get good judges. I agree wih the point made earlier, you need a Judge out of the area - it just negates ary argument that it was given to a mate. You are always going to get the odd hiccup, where someone has judged the wrong end of the lead and this causes a few heated words, but generally I think Judges are putting themselves in the middle of ring to express their opinion and fair play to them, they don't have to do it but hopefully they get more thanks than not. As a Judge I look for fitness, confirmation, ring presence and the ability to perform the job - but there is no telling whether the dog truley works, but it doesn't matter, the shows are not about working their about POTENTIAL. The NR&LC club is still going strong and does produce a list of lurcher judges all over the country, so if you are ever stuck you can contact them and they will provide you with a list of judges which have been "proven" as a success. From the pedigree view - having shown staffies, believe me, lurcher showing is far more fun and not so "polictical" Good luck to all the Judges, organisers and showers for the season XX
TOPPER 1,809
shows are just a bit of fun or should be, having judged terriers at many shows over the years its well known i like a strong well put together dog as a oposed to a small weak looking thing but you will never please all the people all the time just be fair is all you can do they pay there money so there deserve the same attention as the next man/women
