hi all, i have just bought a 7 week old whippet puppy and is my first and I'm hoping to use her for working next year. i have insured her well for any illnesses or injuries. i was wondering if any injuries happen and what sort of things could / have happened to any of your guys dogs. i just wondered what to look out to prevent any happening when she starts working, thank you tom.

Best bit of advice i can give you is teach your pup about BARBED FECKING WIRE! From your first walk have the pup out in the field crossing barbed wire fences and running around the stuff, they will soon learn what it is, how to spot it and how best to negotiate it. Dont do what some do and just avoid it, the pup needs to become wise to it. There almost certainly will be minor injuries as your pup grows and when it begins work, but a wise pup is far less likely to seriously injure itself. To deal with a barbed wire injury depends on how bad it is, but they are usually just skin rips and a cleaning with salt water is enough. My pup split her head open when about 6 months on barbed wire and the 2 inch gash healed perfectly.

Barbed wire will keep you busy with a whippet. I have a two year old, whilst he does not clatter into it he catches him self on it regular. Head and back are the most common places to catch it. His first was the length of his chest and stomache on boxing day when he was just under a year old and got panicked by another dog. He pays it little attention and slows only slightly when he is chasing a rabbit in the day or at night. The skin on a whippet is like tissue paper. Salt water bath and tea tree oil rubbed in a for a couple of days sorts out the nastiest of looking cuts and he heals really well.
