sounder 9 Posted March 4, 2010 Author Report Share Posted March 4, 2010 i was under the impression it was need intrevenously if kidneys needed flushing mate know a dog that drunk antifreeze, an needed it done.... only dog iv ever known it needed.... no mate all dog could do with it at some stage it helps get the toxins to flush out of the kidneys , even after a worm dose it has toxins in it that needs help to flush, it also done for if a dog has ate rat poison sounder Quote Link to post Share on other sites
sandymere 8,261 Posted March 5, 2010 Report Share Posted March 5, 2010 (edited) The kidneys are filters that filter certain chemicals from the blood whilst leaving others in, urea and creatinine out, red cells glucose in, you can't flush them as such. You can increase through put by increasing water intake so increasing urine output or giving a diuretic (water tablet) but this could unwanted side effects such as electrolyte imbalence, dehydration etc and certainly not needed in a healthy dog. Most chemicals outside of the normal metabolic waste products are dealt with by the liver and this is even more unflushable. Basically I'm a little lost can someone expand on kidney flushes how they work or at least why? Found some basically it was baking soda with a bit of salt, hope you don't pay much for it! The bicarb may make urine slightly more alkaline for a short while and help with constipation and the salt will encourage drinking so increase urine output for an hour or so. Would be easier to make a weak gravy with a little bicarb it'll be cheaper. Neither will probably do any harm if used occaisionally but probably won't do any good either.
