oakey 57
I've just got my new lurcher pup 7wks old , when i got her she had fleas so i used frontline spray and got rid of them. Still she wouldn't stop scratching then i took her to the vet who sold me a little tube of cream for £8 still no good then i bathed her using a mild puppy shampoo still no good . So im off to the vets again soon for her jabs. Has anyone got any ideas as it must be driving her mad ?
Back Stabbath 1
She could be allergic to something. What are you feeding her? If she's not already, get her on a natural diet of meat, raw bones, some ground up veg, eggs, and a little cod liver oil each day. 1/4 teaspoon will suffice. If she's having any milk or dairy, take her off them, pasteurised milk is often a cause of allergies in dogs. They seem to do fine on unpasteurised milk though. I would cut out ALL commercial dog food, at least until she is grown up a bit. Its unlikely that it would be fleas still, since you've put frontline on her. Thats pretty strong stuff. It could be mange, if it is you will probably start to see little bald patches. The vet will need to do a skin scraping to see if it is or not. It could be a reaction to the frontline, where the fleas caused the initial problem, its killed the fleas but taken over and caused an itchy reaction. Vaccinations can also cause allergies and other complications. I would recommend that you don't have all the vaccines done at once, but rather space them out over a few weeks to give her body time to recover. 7 weeks is very young and a pups immune system is very delicate. If her immune system is not top notch, which may be a factor in the scratching, the vaccines may do more harm than good at this stage. I'm not saying don't have them done, just be aware of the risks. So look at the diet, make changes if necessary, if no improvement is seen I'd take her to the vet again and perhaps get a skin scraping. Good luck
Footu 1
is it scatching the same spot? Is it an old bite- they can itch for a while if so use antihistamine tablets or creams.
lurchergrrl 1,441
Did you treat her bedding and any other areas in the house/kennel? Fleas don't live on the dog, they live in bedding, carpet, skirting boards etc etc. They feed off the animal, then leg it. If she came with fleas you need to do a total treatment of any places where the fleas would be breeding. Get some spray for the house or kennel, whichever she's in. Wash her bedding on the boil. If she's in the house, I suggest you hoover first, then spray - but make sure you toss the hoover bag soon as you've used it or they'll just jump right back out. Then repeat the treatment a few days later. So long as she's treated as well as her environment you should be rid soon enough.
Gin 503
It could well be a reaction to the flea bite, which can take some time to heal. Yes, antihistamine tablets. A pups injections have to be four weeks apart and given at 10 or 12 weeks for the first one, vets are now suggesting, for the pups immune system.
Back Stabbath 1
Yeah good point as someone suggested about the bedding, however a lot of the time the fleas wont go back on the dog for a while after you put the spot treatment on
