my poorly whippet

please help. my new(ish) whippet bitch is now 6 months old and we are having major issues trying to house train the little darling. She drinks all the water we put down for her and is constantly looking for more. She will try to set off for the door but most of the time cant make it or will leave a trail behind her, sometimes both. The most worrying thing though is that she will urinate in her bed which she shares with my other whippet dog. this is getting her some terrible looks from the big fella. We got her at (apparently) 9 weeks old back in october, although she was so small our vet thought she was a JR. She will not sleep all night and my girlfriend is up at least once but more like twice or 3 times a night. Which as you can imagine is becoming a nause. we cant leave her for more than about 4 hours without her wetting the bed. This is starting to become a concern.

 

any and all advice would be most welcome

kennel her out side problem solved. if your that concerned mate and think she has something wrong get her to the vet

If she's drinking more than she should which it sounds like she is straight to the vet asap. Lots of probs from urinary infections to far more serious vet asap! All the best.

very unusal for a whippet to drink excessively also normally very good re house training, i would suggest your dog has a medical problem i would also check your dogs ped as it does look like a whippet to me (I have 5)

I would get her to the vets like slim and paddy have said if shes drinking a lot and urinating not able to control where or when she might have something wrong with her kidneys or bladder. not the news you want to hear but its best to find out as soon as incase theres an op she can have or medication to help

Take her to the vet straight away......she could be diabetic or have an infection....do you feed her dry food? if so try her on dog meat with some fish oil. or even tinned fish.

to answer a few questions;

 

She is probably not 100% whippet as she has no papers think there could be some bull in there somewhere, not overly concerned she is more a pet than a breeding tool or showing dog. Would like to get her at a few conies but all in due time.

 

she is great at holding the solids no accidents as yet.

 

oh and i totaly agree ref kenneling her outside unfortunately the better half wont have it.

I have a whippet pup at a simular age, She's in the house too and is as clean as can be, has been since i got her at 16weeks old. She sleeps in a cage at night. Whippets as a rule don't drink like that unless there is something wrong. I feed mine a complete dry food and they don't drink excessive amounts, between the 2 they will probably drink about 1/2 a pint a day.

 

As already stated i would be taking her to the vets and getting her looked at as something isn't quite right with the bitch drinking the amount she's drinking. With the amounts she's drinking you can't blame her for wetting everywhere.

Just to throw my tuppence in, I agree with the others: get her to the vet. Excessive drinking can indicate a big problem, you want to get that checked out as soon as possible.

Sounds like diabetes to me I had a whippet with the same problems. Hope it's not .

i have whippets all drink a fair bit more than all of yours daily i feed raw to all except the bitch i keep indoors she has a problem and is on special urinary feed from the vet she drinks about a pint usualy a little more every day she never has any problems holding her water though she sleeps from ten pm and refuses to get out her bed in the morning till she is ready usualy after 10am the girl ses .

BigSid you sound like a man that cares about his dogs so take the pup to the vets asap as it does sound like it has a medical problem i say this with first hand experience as one of my lurchers had the same problem with drinking lots of water and that turned out to be a very bad kidney problem but it was sorted in the end but i wished i had taken him sooner as the problem was much worse by the time i did take him.

Any way let us all know how it turns out with the pup and the best of luck ....
