poacherman 353
after hurting herself two weeks ago on a barbed wired fence a lay her up fur nearly two weeks. a took her out yesterday and see the difference in fitness and sharpness. it looked like she had only started on rabbits again. it was only two weeks she was out for but its unbeleivable how it can affect running dogs. a took her to a bit in perth where theres loads a rabbits. had the two ferrets with me and my springer. in my mind a thought the lurcher would get a good few, maybe double figures by going with the way it was going before it got injured and the amount of rabbits on this bit of ground. the place i went is a bit hard for the lurchers tho. the rabbits were just coming out warren and heading straight to the other ones 20 yards away left or right so the dog had to be on its toes and be sharp on them. the lurcher never got one all day. was all over 3 or 4 of them but never picked them. ended up with 5 rabbits. ferrets got 4 at edge of the holes and my springer got one in the brambles. am taking her out lamping tonight. need her fit again. just feel sorry for the guys that need to lay there dogs up for months at a time after serious injuries atb poacherman Quote Link to post
Paul in North Lincs 15
I know how you feel mate............. had my 14 month pup laid up for a month after a serious cut to the leg and main artery... Was just starting to catch regularly after a slow start and the need for loads of training on the strike....... he just got the knack. He got injured, and is now running and turning like an ametur again. Im just hammering the ball work to get him used to gettin his head down again. i guess he's still abit tight on that leg. But its fustrating I know. He went from running 30 - 40 long distance balls to 7 then lying down!!!!! Just starting to get back upto double figures, but he's missing some really easy rabbit at the moment. Im going to leave him off them till the fitnness levels get back up! Quote Link to post

villebones 4
My Dogs been off for two weeks due to a leg injury whilst ferreting. Got the stitches off last night. Took him for his first off lead walk since he injured himself and he cut open his chest on some barbed wire. Be a good few weeks before it heals. And I've only got a 5 month old pup as a reserve but she's too young at the moment. Quote Link to post
Simoman 110
Its quite startling how quickly the fitness suffers if the dog isn't kept working and exercising regularly, we have a bitch just starting off the lead exercise after a leg break in October and it will take some time to get her right, the muscle tone and condition will take some recovery after months of cage rest and two operations. We will have the summer months to prepare for next season..... Quote Link to post
GILLYDOG 18
my 18 month beddyxgrey tore his stopper pad which had to be removed, and your right about fitness soon lose that edge.always wondered if they lose a bit of confidence also.his leg is healed up now but it always looked like he was looking after himself for a while.its been bad enough with the weather but even worse when they pick up an injury.oh the joys Quote Link to post

poacherman 353
she was doing great up until she got her cut. especially on the strike. yesterday she actually touched two rabbits and was running next to them. so a think her confidence was a bit low aswell. the only way to solve the problem of fitness, sharpness and confidence is getting her back out and get her more runs on rabbits and once she gets a couple it will all start coming back into shape again. on the cuts on my dog i used vet veterinary would powder. i would reccomemnd that to anyone with a cut on there dogs. couldnt believe how fast it cleared up my dogs wound atb poacher Edited February 11, 2010 by poacherman Quote Link to post
