Over Foxdroppers last night....

Recommended Posts

I've been rough as a badgers arse for a few weeks so I was looking forward to getting out now I'm feeling a bit better, and then FD gave me a ring to go over his, firstly for a Roe on one of his permissions that is a Market Garden that is getting smashed to bits by regular visits from the local deer gang.

We got there just in time really as the light was fading, but, there were about 6-7 Roe on there(no wonder the farmer is ripping his hair out)we had to push the deer into a corner that would give us a safe shot as this piece of land is as flat as a witches tit, and,by the time we did that it was just on the edge of darkness,so,when the 100 grainer slammed home the Roe Doe ran on about 20yds and fell dead.FD commented that the shot was a tad low, but,I did a short gralloch in the field and finished off when I got home later to find the heart completely obliterated,so low or not it done the job with little meat damage.

We put the carcase in the truck(forgot to take a pic....sorry)and went to see if there were any Charlies on another bit of FD's land, when we entered the yard there was a meeow from the darkness and FD said that the farmer has a litter of kittens to help with the rats, anyway we carried on around the fields,we did see a few foxes, but, they were not having any of it,they were obviously more intent on getting some fox nookie. We had gone full cicle on the land, and,we were in the last field before going back into the yard when a set of eyes shone back from a small spinney next to one of the barns, but,it wouldn't stay still so we walked on into it a bit, and, then as it was back in the wood a bit I guess it felt safe, and, she stood still for a few seconds looking straight down the barrel that would end it's night time forays with a solid thud into the chest, she was a heavily pregnant vixen, and, she was in great condition...........

As we returned to the yard to drop off the fox for the farmer(he likes to see the results)we heard another small meeow, and FD put the lamp on it,and, there sat on an old pallet was a small kitten that looked as if it had been in some water(like a drowned rat)but,it had it's front left leg snapped right near the body with a large protruberance of jagged bone that had obviously been like it for a little while. Now,I hate cats, but, this poor little tyke was obviously in a lot of pain and looked so pathetic sat there, and,I'm afraid I had to euthanise it(very quick and painless).....poor little bugger. It did put a bit of a dampener on the night, especially for FD as he was sure he would have nightmares hearing the pitiful meeows in his sleep.....hope you managed a couple of hours mate..............Martin
