Casso 1,264
Id like the get some opinions on this, a lot of lads come on here asking about starting a pup,Now , depending on what your going to do with the dog should dicate what way he's started,By all means take your pup out and get him used to the envoirment ,he's going to work in, but i wouldn't start a lamping dog off mooching and bushing and hunting up during the day, it leaves a lot of them when eventually they start on the lamp, with a lot of confusion to deal with, which often leads to a dog who will hunt up at night, In the same way, that you wouldn't start a coursing dog off, on the lamp.....would ya... adamb20 22
before the big freeze i used my beddy whippet x collie grey for lamping mainly. as soon as i turned the lamp off she would come back to my side. when the snow came i used her for mooching/bushing daytime. which she proved to be quite good at. when the snow had gone i was having problems with my lamp so i continued to use her for mooching. when i got a new lamp and took her out after every slip she had to be told 2 or 3 times to come back. i do think that she was confused by this. plus when i have been going out localy on a night on my own theres not much about i let her run free and hunt up the rough etc too. its hard for her too switch between the two when i go out lamping properly with mates. she still more obedient than some of my mates dogs who havent put much effort in, but it is anoying. i have a 12 week old pup at the minute and have decided that she will not be allowed to hunt up and bush and will be kept on slip for running game that my older dog flush etc as some times wwhen she flushes the likes of deer out of woodland she looses a lot of ground by the time she gets out her self. plus my pup wi ll have a lot more pace for open ground running as she is a very racey looking 5/8 3/8 c grey collie. big one pups mother, racey and only a half cross. moonlighter 1,165
i start my dogs off on te lamp and i think it only improves them...they get more kills under the belt and makes there strike 100%. the only time i dont lamp them is when the dog is up too a certain level and maybe competing coursing, because lamping is the most demanding type of lurcher work bar none, and it would age a coursing dog too soon and sods law they would take a knock a week before a coursing meet.
