Back Stabbath 1
Just wondering. Or maybe any other pure bred dog, as opposed to a lurcher. Cheers Quote Link to post

Back Stabbath 1
Ah right, cheers for the reply. I too have heard of collies being used before but never actually from a first hand source. Quote Link to post

Back Stabbath 1
Right, cool. I would imagine speed as you said, and perhaps the actual 'kill instinct' would be possible problems. Quote Link to post
herdwick 52
I used to lamp a pure collie back in the ,s. When I first started her she wouldnt run down the beam but come in from the side. She used to catch quite a few, perhaps 4 out of every 10 runs, but if you chose the rabbits you ran her on, her averages would go up to perhaps 6 or 7 out of 10. It took her a long time to learn to pick rabbits up, she used to hold them with her front feet until I got there to take them from her. She did the same when ferretting. Also lamped a colliexhuntaway about 10 years ago. She never worked cattle or sheep, just lived for hunting. Took numerous foxes with her, usually in daylight. 1st one she got, terriers flushed for her, she slowed it up enough for the terriers to get up to show her what to do and she never looked back. Back Stabbath 1
Ha, thats great. I have a doberman. He's very keen but not really agile enough, but I'd say he might be better on more open terrain than what I have to work with. Also he's a big European working line lad, a lot of the english line dobes are skinny and that would probably account some for that dobes hunting ability. The tail I believe makes a difference, its a bit of a pain in the hole Murdock being docked, I would much prefer a tail on him, one of the reasons being quick turning. I also talked to a man at a show once, he came up to us when me and Murdock had won and complimented us and said he had a GSD/Doberman and it was a brilliant hare dog. Used to go out into the field of cattle and drive the hare into the herd to trap it in and then catch it. And I'd well believe it, very clever indeed. I believe a doberman would be a good breed to put into a lurcher. Quote Link to post
bagzi 0
On the farm where I lived as a boy they had to large type borders for herding the cattle who reguarly caught Hares, when they should have been Droving. Quote Link to post
Back Stabbath 1
Haha, thats cool. I've heard of some farm guardian dogs actually, when mostly let think for themselves, turn into quite good hunters of mice and rabbits etc. for their own personal food supplies! Quote Link to post
grompz 706
Haha, thats cool. I've heard of some farm guardian dogs actually, when mostly let think for themselves, turn into quite good hunters of mice and rabbits etc. for their own personal food supplies! i've seen a good few farm bred collies, that could work the lamp and were soft mouthed, good ferreting and marking dogs. could work with the gun, and in my youth alot of the old boys always used them to feed their families when you had to catch rabbits to survive,as regards collies catching hares on the lamp it is no great feat.
