alday 0
hi i'm a mexican hunter, i work with many different dogs, but i'm having trouble to catch hare, there is nobody who breeds lurchers in mexico, so i want to make my own, the prpblem here is that running dogs, whippet greyhound galgo español borzoi saluki, afgan are very expensive dogs, but i do have a border collie, dutch shepherd, and australian cattle dog bitches as well as pitbulls bull terriers and more terriers, so i want to know if crossing running dogs over shepherd or bull bitches i can get good lurchers... or if i need to get a running dog bitch... thankyou very much... i want to use a whippet or borzoi male Quote Link to post

iceman001979 1,316
1st what sort off ground are yea running on sand or stone because your going need a dog with tough feet if yea are.Your bull terriers are no good as a cross for hare but your collie should be a good cross over most running dogs just takes time till get a good lucher all the best Quote Link to post
coursing mad 5
you sure you dont need to ask questions about pigs ?? Quote Link to post
ferreter.al 22
going to need a running dog to start with.hope that you manage to get the dog you are after. Quote Link to post
steveS.Yorks 161
Assuming this is genuine mate[im not sure] i think the best option would be the Autralian cattle dog x Saluki if you can find a stud dog? Reason being they were developed in a similar enviorement and could manage the heat better than a standard collie, probably better feet as well. Try and read anything by "Dutch Salmon" he runs dogs in the USA,the bloke talks a lot of sense and hunts similar ground/quarry as you will. Good luck. Quote Link to post
Pops 19
where in Mexico are you? you can pick up running dog pups in New Mexico, Arizona & parts of Texas & Oklahoma for a few hundred bucks. if that isn't an option in your shoes i'd get the leggiest blue or red heeler bitch i could find and put her under the galgo or saluki. alday 0
sorry of double posting, there are the pics is missing one of my bull terrier, otherpitbull and the cattle dog also a wire fox terrier bitch i'll post them later... but please more replies and thank you for the already given Quote Link to post
steveS.Yorks 161
If the sheperd bitch is catching the odd hare a whippet over her should produce something useful, thats what i would do and keep the biggest pups, use the biggest[tallest] whippet you can. I dont know much about Borzoi's really, they are supposed to be a bit stupid, but if youre putting it over a herding dog it shouldnt matter the bitch will give it some sense i would think. alday 0
she's smart intuitive hunter, shes great catching squirrels... the borszoi has extremely long legs and were supposed to be hunting in tough places like russia, (hare, as well as wolves) i like the long hair for mexico vegetation lotsof pikes, and cactus as well as nopales, and i've read on an australian page greyhounds and whippets have not enough stamina, for long hunting periodsbut i really ignore about this topic, the most common preys in here are lots and lots of squirrels, rabbit, hare, as well as tlacuache (i think it is smaller than the possum)there are a lot of skunks but is not desired prey lol ha ha ha there arealso coyote, but i'm afraid to put my dogs on them yet, i'll do it when i have a pitbull ready. well if anybody has a cross of a running dog over a herding bitch or pitbull bitch please post a pic, or if anybody has exoerience with this tipe of dog please tell me. what do you think of crossing the three bitches with the borzoi, keep the more running shaped dpgs and breed them with more borzoi, or other running dogs what you think, and anyway i think the puppies are gonna be good hunting dogs so it is not trouble to get good homes for them between hunters, but mexican people is evry narrow minded they don't trust in mixedbreeds, they trust more a lab from unknown lines from and obese female as a hunting dog than a good terrier mix, (i tried wire fox terrier x tenterfield to ad speed and agility for the rats in the farms and they didn't wanted cause it wasn't pure...) so i think it is gonna be more difficult to get homes for the "lurchers" and i can't keep them all so... if you would do just one croos which one will you do my cattle is red heeler extremely fast very inteligent, obedient, doesen't feel weather, but hasn0t long legs as the dutch shepherd and sh's to young to really know how good is her nose....
