sometree 0
Hi there, writtle is ok. They dont do much practice work in their first year or so. But it is a 3 year course. I never went there, i went to shuttleworth, but writtle used to own it. Writtle then went bust and sold their ties with Shuttleworth. Writtle also sold off their whole pig unit and most of thier rare breed cows where for sale last time I phoned them. Seems asif the college is slowly closing. Otley is supposed to be good. I have recently thaught about going back to college and I did look at otley and I have some mates that were going to go there. Aparantly it is really nice. I also looked at hartpury, but i think that otley looks better> Hope this helps Matt Quote Link to post

Hannah4181 260
How refreshing to have a post from a young lad, not written in text talk, and asking a genuine question on furthering his education!! :notworthy: My mum works at Otley, it is a good college, but the farming side of it has been reduced due to lack of funding and the need within the education system to include more academic courses. Also the farming industry has had a lot of problems in recent years, forcing colleges to diversify into other fields. The distance as you mention would also be a problem. Ipswich is the nearest town and has plenty of student accommodation. If i was you i would stick to Sparsholt as it appears to be the leading college in its field. The best thing to do would be to apply as you have and then go to an open day and see the facilities for yourself. It would also be a great opportunity to speak to the staff and student workers there, who i'm sure will advise you on funding, grants, transport and accommodation. Very best of luck with it. sometree 0
Hi,my mates that all go ther or went there were all around 16 when they joined. Some have been there for 3 years, some have been there 2 years. Shuttleworth is an OK college and it gives you the paperwork that you need. The work is all managable and you do learn a lot if you pay attention. The lectures are top notch and real nice guys and will always help you etc. Im also from Herts. Im based in Hitchin but I went to shuttleworth and lived in, which was a real good crack. I still spend a lot of time at Shutts actually. I go there to see the lectures and mates, and Im often found at the bar there in the evenings (someone has to keep the place going haha).. In all honesty, you need to be in with a good group there for your lessons.. If you get a load of kids that just want to mess about, you will struggle because of the disruption with the learning etc. Same as anywhere really.. If you want to know anything about the college or anything about the course, PM me and I can give you my number if you want a chat, and I can also show you the type of thing you will learn there if i can find all my old work when I was there. Im 22 this year and I enjoyed Shutts alot and I still keep in touch with them as I said before, they are real nice guys and always help. Iv got a 1000acre farm in hitchin and I only did the course for the certificate for insurance purposes on my farm, but im glad I did do it because they teach you about all different types of farming etc and you go on trips to France and Derbyshire etc to see farming out there. All In All its a good college and I would advise it to people although Bedford college has now taken over and a few of the guys that were there when Writtle owned it have said it has changed a lot. Always worth a look there and if you want someone to show you around and if you dont live too far away, i am more than willing to come and collect you and take you round etc All the best Matt Quote Link to post
olim 28
Thanks for all of the advice, I have just got the prospectus for shuttleworth through the post today, it looks like a good place, so I will go and see the college on one of the open days they have, thanks for the offer of taking me but I live in Bishops stortford which is a bit far and my parents will want to see it aswel, I sure that I will talk to you at some point about the college and see you in the future if I go there.
