andri 73 Posted January 12, 2010 Report Share Posted January 12, 2010 you were saying WATCHMAN......pmsl, you couldnt make it up yer i saw his post on starting dogs young and this is how i do it i have them out walking at about 4months with the older dogs just mooching so it learns what it quarry is and then at a about 5months i take him ferreting with nets so he just holds them for mr and at about 6months i take it out walking and watching the other dogs and only slip him on one or two sensible rabbits with the older dogs and then once they have learned the lamp abit afer about a week 2weeks of tht i give them real easy sensible runs on the lamp so that it builds confidence for the dog with other dogs and occasionally on their own and then ceep doing that till its about 8months and then give it not so easy runs but sensible runs on its own because buy then it should kill you 3-4 a night buy its salf and then buy the time its 9-10 months its going fully on rabbits and squirrels and rats and then at about a 12-15months depending on the dog start it on small foxes and once it s had a few of them let it have it on every fox you see big or small and thats how i train a dog and its allways worked for me Quote Link to post

mattyg 1,862 Posted January 12, 2010 Report Share Posted January 12, 2010 there is no wrong or right way of bringing a pup on, but i do think there is an accepted "good practice"...as long as you are happy to work the dog then good for you...by the way, both of my dogs hardly retrieve and that is fully down to my "bad practice"....no one is perfect, but some people have a better grasp on how thing should be done.....im not one of em! all the best with your dog, just hope its not for sale next season due to jacking from being over matched too early cheers, matt Quote Link to post
