Guest alastair Posted September 23, 2006 Report Share Posted September 23, 2006 having only been to a handfull of shows ,i just cannot work out why a whippetx greyhound,or saluki x whippet,etc etc allways wins?a mate attended the midland and said there was a superb bullx that was robbed over to a dog of the above cross.is that a lurcher,i allways understood 2 running dogs crossed is a longdog and not a lurcher and a longdog does look better than a lurcher so its unfair? i dont go to shows much ,cause i think looks are unimportant if its a good worker,and you allways get the to serious rosette gatherers.also they enter them in the racing which is wrong ? am i correct. Check out more shows. Its not always the longdog that wins. Its down to the judge on the day, hopefully doing a fair job, although personal preference may come into it. Its a beauty competition anyway. Next point - not its not wrong to enter them in the racing, a good many owners enter both and there again there are some who only enter the racing and go home before the showing starts. And I agree looks are unimportant if the dog works well for you but its nice to do both, specially in the summer when theres not much else on. Quote Link to post Share on other sites

No ........any baseline dog eg.collie,kelpie,bedlington,bull ect. crossed with a Greyhound or whippet is a Lurcher............any two running dogs crossed e.g. whippet, greyhound,deerhound,saluki ect is a longdog. Sighthounds crossed together are called longdogs. A different working breed ie...collie, terrier, bull crossed with a sighthound is called a lurcher, doesnt have to be a greyhound But i call them all lurchers anyway :whistle: MOLL. Guest JOEB Posted September 23, 2006 Report Share Posted September 23, 2006 There was indeed a very nice looking fawn & white bull cross in the final I think?..........& it looked like one of the only dogs in there that actually may get out and do a bit.........could be wrong? Anyway, a hairy type lurcher won it, and the thing was, you just new it was going to.......... To be honest, not many of the dogs I saw had a mark on the legs, so either theres not much heavy cover where they hunt or they dont see that much. JOEB ah.....that fella with loads of dogs,after your dogs had a run he goes and gets a fresh dog out the car its a bit unorganized in some areas,if i were the judge and a guy said its a whippetxgrey i would ask him to leave the ring cause on paper it aint a lurcher.the first and last time i put my young dog in the ring it had just had an operation on it mouth,2 teeth out etc etc due to lamping accident,and cause judge couldnt look in its mouth 100% he told me to leave the ring neve mind its good to look at other dogs and have a chat. All this longdog/lurcher crap, I was talking to a guy yesterday and asked the breeding of his lurchers, one was collie based but then he proceded to tell me the other dog was a saluki/whippet/greyhound mix and was not a lurcher but a longdog and how it annoyed him when people called it a lurcher blah, blah, blah, the funniest thing was he told me he didn't work them as it was cruel, at which point I walked away Shows should be taken as fun and when it becomes all about chasing rosettes its a very very sad state of affairs P.S. The best looking dog I have seen was a heavily muscled bull x owned by a scottish guy who was at the F & M east mids show and the midland. Quote Link to post Share on other sites
