Guest bodgerbear
Good evening all. Right stupid question time. Ive noticed that alot of you start ferreting first thing in the morning. Now my last few trips have all been mid morning and my sucsess rate is not very good. If I turned up about 6am will there be more chance of someone being home? Im sorry if this is stupid but as with most things I do im full of enthusiasum but lacking in knowedge. Cheers all Rob Quote Link to post
stealthy1 3,964
The reason I start early is because I packup about 2 o'clock just incase I wind up with a good dig before dark, I think you'll find your lack of results is more due to the fact that there is nothing at home rather than your starting time Quote Link to post
happy larry 3
most people start ferreting 1st thing due to it gets dark early, last thing we want is a ferret laying up and a dig in the dark.if your success rate isnt very good, could be several reasons ie if you make loads of noise whilst approaching the set and netting up makes rabbits reluctant to bolt.or there maybe no rabbits at home, can you get a dog to mark for you.at 6am the rabbits will still be out feeding so your going to spook them.8am should see most of them back in the warren Quote Link to post
Guest bodgerbear
Oh bugger, never thought that no one would be home Good tip about the early start incase of digging Now I know fresh droppings are not always a good indicator that someones home, but at night I can see 20+ of the little buggers dissapearig into the undergrowth and try as I might I cant seem to find these warrens. I think its time for more walking around my permission with a billhook to try and find these illusive warrens. Quote Link to post
stealthy1 3,964
Rabbits will travel a fair bit from home to feed at night, the droppings on the empty warrens are usually made by rabbits feeding near by, but once they have had their fill the high tail it home, and normally thats why you find so many droppings outside an empty warren Quote Link to post
The one 8,623
If were travelling a bit we like a early start and a early finish in case something happens but nearer home we start later but as said it doesn't matter what time you start if theres nothing home Quote Link to post
