Alright folks,

Just wondering wether any of you very knowledgable people out there would know where to allocate and maybe put a price to this type of rat trap

rattrapiz1.jpg

The lad i do alot of ratting with has got about half a dozen very old ones but is reluctent to lend/sell me one as he considers them to be like rocking horse shit. Was looking at one on eBay but was outbid. Used to have one years back and cud catch in excess of 5 rats a night in it, just the german shepherd we had at the time found the cage full of rats before i did and demolished the cage. Anyother cage / multi catch traps on the market you would reccomend feel free as i shall be buying a few for around the yard.

Cheers

It's a Monarch Rat Trap. One of the best multi catch cages there's ever been. Most 'Experts' would credit Samual Young with inventing it. It certainly bears his given name, " Monarch ". However, I'm 99% sure I've come across the Patent for it, and it wasn't Samual who took that out. Was his invention 'stolen'? Or did his outfit just start making someone elses invention? One of these days I'll have the time again to dig back and settle that question. But that's not helping you right now, is it? Heh :drink:

Go here; John Dee Humane Traps. That's their Contact page and even has their e mail. They'll sell ye proper, British made versions. Do ask them, to check. I'd guess they have theirs made by Bodiss, one of the few remaining British Cage Trap makers and a firm that's been around for ever. Expect to pay, give or take, twenty quid.

And now some bright spark may well pop up and say 'Go to eBay / TrapMan'. Fine. You do that. Only know this: " TrapMan ", I hear, has more entry stamps for CHINA on his passport these days than my arse has hairs. I've also seen this same design offered, on the net, in every colour of the rainbow. Direct from China. Why would you want a thin, soft, electric blue or metalic purple version of what British firms still make in galvanised gray and good steel?

Your choice. But, if you buy the cheap cwap, just compare one to your mates old originals there ;)

You can find Duke 110 conibears for 3.50 and duke #0 longsprings for about 5.00 at http://www.fntpost.com/ and there are price breaks for buying 6 or 12

I'm going to be buying a few myself for rats. Just keep in mind other animals when setting them, but the #0 are so small I dont think it could hurt or even hold a cat or dog.

I did wonder about this as I thought the "Trap Man" traps were made by them in the UK so I checked their site and read this in their add for the monarch trap........

"This is not the flimsy mesh type so called Monarch rat trap that our competitors sell for less. This is a strong purpose built rat trap manufactured here in the UK by The Trap Man using the same technique as the original design employed when it was first manufactured by hand over 100 years ago. The whole trap is hand made from 1.5mm wire which is dipped into molten zinc after manufacture to give a rat trap that will last a lifetime of use and abuse, no C clips or zinc plated mesh on our Monarch Rat Trap "

VD (Surely the most unfortunate abbreviation imaginable? ) That particular blurb's been on that site since it started.

There are very few British trap manufacturing firms still going. As a Pro' Pester, I still tend to get my own bits and pieces via Killgerm. Their cage rat traps are made by Boddis. I've personally spoken to one of the guys who makes them. My guess - because I never thought to ask - is that they make the 'Monarch' style too. Likely always have. Fenn certainly don't. Nor the 'Springer' outfit. Fenn do still make a beautifull, double gated mink cage though.

There's a fair bit of animosity among certain of the british suppliers. I was informed, by one of them, that ye man there has gone Chinese. I'd be openly and quite neutrally fasinated to learn more, either way.

Mheanwhile, I make sure my traps are made in Britain unless otherwise stated. Try hitting Google with " Rat Trap China ". I was just searching under " Rat Trap " for half a night when I came across those electric blue and ultra violet monstrosities. God alone knows where they sell to. But they're out there. And they're " Monarch " pattern.

Incidently, I came across the name of the patent holder (as was?) for that design just the other night. Sheer fluke. I believe it was a Mr Montague. Haven't time to check it right now and it hardly matters. Just more trivia ;)

That's my all time favourite stle of 'Monarch', Chalkie :) Incredibly; I haven't got one like it any more!

What I do have though is a square meshed one. Only this one bears a Young's label that must date from the ark. Big old dark, brassy thing. It's beautiful. I'll try to remember to get a shot of it tomorrow, in natural light. Pop it up in this; 'The " Monarch Rat Trap Thread " :D
