changes over the years

Recommended Posts

I think so as well mate ive been out with a few guys and if the ferret doesn't show in 5 mins out comes the spade in older days that just wouldn't happen

iv had the same mate, seen people jumping all over a warren befor the ferret tail is out of view, total knob heads and then wonder why they constantly digging, needless to say i dont entertain these types anymore,i do use a locator but i wont use it till iv give them time to work the set, this time will vary on the size of the set im doing but patience really is key imo

Nah not at all. Digging out ferrets and rabbits was happening long before locaters came out, using a liner hob and a probe. Somewhere along the line the 'cute folk' saw there was an easier way by doing half a job by never putting a spade to ground. Wish i could tell you more about the old ways with the liner hob, never used the method myself as it has been lost in the circles i work in, but maybee i'll have a try one day and see what i can work out myself.

ive been looking at some of the ferrets on thl lately some of them are huge....i try to have small ferrets so i dont have to dig and dont get lay ups.....most of the posts now all have a bit of digging do you think these changes are because locators have come out?

i do not use locators at all sold them last year i still stick to the method of been quiet nets on holes and out they come the longest my ferret ever been down is 35 min. she comes out and i go to next one . she prob killed in there but to dig may be 3 or 4 feet in clay or rocks ( most of my ground is that) its not worth it to me.

I put it down to knowing my ferrets, if they have nt shown for 5minutes I can bet my last £1 they have one, locate it mark the spot and note the depth, they kill and move on if its shallow enough dig the rabbit out, if too deep dont bother move on

Dont forget to tell the guys to keep digging after the ferret has shown on a cross and has been put back in the box.

A few more spoonfulls out of a dig when the ferret is boxed up can see another corpse on the string rather than being left to rot downstairs for nothing.
