Best for ratting and marking rabbits.

Recommended Posts

Just wondering which is the ideal terrier to go ratting, marking rabbit warrens and occasionally dig for fox.

I am thinking along the lines of a plummer or a parsons cos i've heard patterdales can start to get vicious with other dogs after a few encounters with charlie.

any terrier should be ok for the job you want mate all terriers take to the rating and rabbiting game readily. You need to be careful though because if you work terriers to rabbits and fox ive seen some entering rabbit burrows and thats when trouble starts. Regarding the pats mate being bad with other dogs then i disagree ive had the black terriers for yrs and i find them the most chilled out terriers with other dogs. Just go to a working show and see which terriers are straining at their leads to fight i bet its not the blacks.

ive got a pat and parson they both work and mark well on rats and rabbits but the pat is far tougher 'doesnt care what the cover is will go through anythin' the parson has a bit of wit about him and will use his head instead either waiting for them to bolt or puttin himself on a trail. in regards to patterdales temprement he can be firey at times but i wouldnt say it was a problem 'never had a vets bill from it' atb with your choice

Why not go the Beddy route, but maybe a beddy grey, or Beddy whippet 1st x.

They will do all and more of what you want.

Russels mate in my opinion, i have a bitch thats spot on with the rat and rabbits but still trying to get her on charlie :wallbash:

but my mate has a patterdale thats amazing on the fox and is a good bushing dog for rabbits and the only time he starts with othere dogs is if they start with him, cheers.

My little pack consists of..... a jack russell [dog], a russell/lakeland [bitch] and a patterdale [dog].

I take them bushing and i dig to all three of them! Which is best? That is very difficult to say but if I had to then..... for bushing/ratting, the lakeland/russell is my best. For Digging, it totally depends what type of earth it is and what you need to be done.

My Patterdale is fine with other dogs and he has been dug to over 50 times. I think it totally depends on the individual dog and on the owner what the the dog is like with other dogs.

My personal opinion [and everyone has one] is, most dogs will rat and rabbit for you. Not all dogs will go to ground and stay until the job is done, but that is luck of the draw sometimes, no matter how well it is bred.

All I would suggest is, no matter what you decide to get is.... buy from proven working stock. That will give you the best chance of owning the dog that you want!!

Good luck!!
