Kye 77
A youg 'un we took on a trip to central NV...lamped jack rabbits. Same young lad and his first quarry taken with the .17hmr. Blister with some local bird!.. :11: At camp on the north rim of the grand canyon...coyote, hare, me and Blister as a pup. The wifes bitch that she named "Slag"...in Utah. We drove across three states, it took us four hours there and back...eight hours total, for 20 minutes lamping!..Two jack rabbits and a cottontail! Hope these work! Kye,.. Quote Link to post
marko 30
good piccies mate very different whats it like running the dog on the snow or is it more like ice do you have to be more careful of injuries. Quote Link to post
FERRETBOY 680
why do you have to go so far for so few rabbits? isnt there any closer to you? nice looking dogs what crosses are your dogs? is the lurcher scene big in america? good hunting rew Quote Link to post
lampinglurcher 36
great pic would love to try hunting coyotes Quote Link to post
Kye 77
We went that far becuase we had heard there was a rabbit plauge!..lol...there was rabbit sign everyhere, but it was a still, moonlite night, and what with about 50 different predators out for rabbits, they dont like being out on them nights!..lol...the snow was about 3" deep in the deepest parts, and none what so ever for acres and acres. We had LOADS more rabbits local to us...if you want to run your dogs across quartz and rock...you had to choose you area carefully...the local dry lake beds was best for coursing! The brindle bitch is roughly Staghound X Greyhound (supposdly!!!) and the rough brindle male is pure Staghound. The hare coursing is fairly popular over here, as is the coyote hunting...not many people use there dogs AS lurchers though, they usulay try to stick to one quarry and breed/hunt for that...im not fussy mind you.."Owt [bANNED TEXT] 'air on it!"...lol. witton 6
them jack rabbits are huge i wish we had them over here :11: Good hunting David Quote Link to post
dodger 3,587
Good pics and the young lad looks like he,s enjoying his hunting. How do the dogs cope with the ground "FEET WISE" when coursing as it looks hard going? Quote Link to post
Kye 77
Seriously, i have never seen feet on running dogs like the feet on these dogs...the wifes bitch does/has suffered..but she is mostly Greyhound...the Staghounds have feet, imo, tougher than a collie/greys...they are big dogs, my bitch is 31", the male 29"...apart from skinned stoppers, and a few nicks and grazes, they came through the rough sw desert ok...of course theres cactus, which is horrible stuff...dont seem to bother the dogs while they run, but it is the devil to get out...sometimes get as many as 30+ spines in each foot...i avoid it if i can...
