hounds...

Recommended Posts

a lot of posts about lurchers here, but hardly any about hounds.

would be nice to see pics and hear about the different kinds of hounds you keep/hunt with.

i keep a norwegian type known as dunker.

mainly bred for harehunting but will basically hunt anything that runs or flys away from them, preferably hare or fox.

we run single dogs, never packs, and the breed is quite independent.

this little fellow has put on his winterclothes a bit to early.

6 feet of snow and snowshoes are a requirement, not for the dog tough, he just spreads his toes a little.

12 months old and at his first show, did pretty well actually.

got to have a 2.place or better to be able to start in working trials.

so, if anyone has any pics or experiences, put them up.

if you want to see more dunker´s check out this link:dunker shows

Nice topic  i love to hear about hunting in other parts of the world.

There are a few members on here that have hounds, they put up good posts every now and then. Use the search function at the top and see what it comes up with?

You have a nice little hound. How do you work them? Do they just run their quarry ddown using their nose and stamina or flush to the gun?

i look forward to seeing a few more posts about him!

thank you, they flush to gun.

but we let them chase it for a while first, a 2 hour run is the benchmark and 1.place in the trials.

while the dog is chasing we´ll make a fire, put on a kettle of coffee and sit back and listen to the dog working.

very good for the soul!

tried the search function but did´nt find any post concerning different types of hounds.

i´d like to hear about the types that are used in england as i know little about them.

Love the photos! I have a Teckel (Dachs) puppy, and will use him as a hound when he is older.

There are a few lads on here that have beagle crosses that will find and flush fox to the lurchers.

Scent! any picture of yours? I seem to remember that you had some?

There are some lads on here that use harriers as well, would be nice to see them.

Also there are a few here that have or walk with packs of rabbit hounds. Bassett type hounds.

would love to see all beagles, harriers and hounds.

teckels are very good dogs, up here they are mainly used for roedeer, but some go to ground.

my dunker is 21", wich is the ideal height.

still going after the badgers, going out again tomorrow, but this is my reason for keeping terriers and trapping, harehunting is my passion.

you´ll find this coat in different parts of europe and russia.

and a few years ago a couple of hounds were sent to greece for outcrossing purposes.

very often the dunkers with these type of coats will have "glasseyes".

there are also two other norwegian breeds:

and the haldenhound.

the haldenhound has a lot of english foxhound blood in it, mixed with local types.

well, i´d still like to hear about and see some english hounds

here´s a couple of clips that some of you might like:

edit:the dunker in the vid is not slipped like a lurcher.

the hare as tried to hide from him, by going back in his tracks then jumping of to the side, in the clip he finds him again.
