Dave C 63
Was out today doing some training with the pup, shot a few crows and she put in some nice retrieves so far so good, so i thought i would leave it there. But on the way back she puts up a nice big Hare, so i blew the stop whistle and let the Hare run as i was on my keepered land and have vermin permission only, for the first time ever she totally ignored me , she stops dead on Rabbits but chased this Hare right over the fell. I never looked for any Rabbits so i don't know if it has spoilt her for them as well, i just came right home,so its back to basics for a few weeks before she sees any more game. I know a few Gundogs that can not resist Hare's but anyone know why ? Dave. Quote Link to post

Dave. this aint gonna help you mate ,but i remember my old mans first gun dog, lab,i was about 11 years old and the dog was not steady to fur,we was on a line walking a field with the gun club ,all the dogs in the line working cover, our dog had a rope on it ,tied to the old mans waist stopping it going to far ahead,a hare got up,the dog went for a full pelt chase, the old man laid his gun on the ground and immediately ran in the opposite direction, the whole line stopped to watch as the lab ran one way and old man ran the other, well as you can imagine the dog ,after this little incident was instantly cured, now i would not, repeat would not, put this into practice but as they say hard times, hard men and all that, like i said not gonna help you but just falls into one of those memories as a kid Quote Link to post

Dave C 63
Thanks for the above, you are dead right. I have been really keeping on top of the stop whistle although she is steady with rabbit. I have been using it when she is playing with my lurcher, waiting until she is in full flight after him, then blowing and stopping her, which she dose OK. After 2 weeks of this, we were shooting Pheasants at the weekend and a Hare pops up right in front of her and she is after it, as soon as i blew the whistle she dropped , i was over the moon, very surprised but over the moon. Thanks again Dave. Quote Link to post
