would have been a better intro if you said you wanted to start up and asked for some advice on how to do so but the way it sounds will put any real falconers back up . go put this post on iff and see what happens ..if you really want to start up for the sake of the bird do it right there is enough f.u.cked up birds getting passed about like second hand porn mags .does sound like a wind up though

Not being funny but IFF would go mental! I've got a fhh and believe me its not as easy as it sounds ! if you are serious about getting a hawk you have to remember its a life long commitment and a harris can live up to 20 years and will need at-least 2 hours a day atleast of your time when training !! plus the flying daily hunting etc ! and more if it goes missing, thats even if it raining snowing etc ! plus you have atleast a £3000 pay out for bits and bobs , food , telementy gloves and the list goes on. And theres the mews (weathering) for her to be in, have you got a garden big enough for one ?. Believe me i know how you feel about hawks but you need to look into this more before you put your life at risk because if parent reared they can hurt lol because they are a wild animal, and also you need to think about the birds life to ! ! and theres the screaming ! loud isn't the word the neighbors wont like that at 3am lol . Best advice do a Lantra course or even find a mentor in your area that could take you under there wing for a few hunting days? I'm not having a go mate honest just under lining some of the facts ! I hope this helps mate all the best ! feel free to pm me if you need some advice regards

Good points raised there Gingerxr2 however I feel your figures of £3000 may be a little off

As his profile has no location date of birth etc I suspect it is just a wind up but it may not be I do think they need to consider the points you have mentioned regarding a mentor and a screaming hawk as parent reared does not guarantee a silent bird.

I have seen some birds in crap condition because they were bought on a whim by someone who wanted one but didnt weigh up the commitment needed. Although the Harris is a good choice for a begginer as its a very forgiving bird.

I have a parent reared that I got at 20 weeks great bird so hand tame it sometimes comes back to the glove with food to eat it. I also have a female that I got second hand again a great bird so the other post regarding a birds being passed around like second hand porn mags is a bit extreme often people dont sell good birds this is true but with Harris Hawks many people get them fly them for a season or two and then want to upgrade to a redtail or gos so put perfectly good birds up for sale.

If more people kept their birds or bought the second hand older birds instead of just writing them off then we would not have as many people breeding the damn things and making them disposable :(

thanks for ur help we've all gotta start somewhere. well for starters im from a 400 acre farm, moneys not really an option and niether is the space iv enough room for a full bird sanctuarry never mind an aviory. so what ever the bird needs it will get. its excellent flying land as iv granted permission to other falconers in the past. i know i might seem a bit of a cock with the banter i had wi (foxy) the bitch. but he really got my back up, i could of easily just gone out n bought a hawk, but no i came on hear for encouragement and advice, so when i do finally get a hawk it has the best possible life and training required. thanks again

400 acres eh?? that should take the grand total of half a day to hunt on at the most.... and day after day?? boy your bird will be lucky! and youve given falconers permission on there before?? thought you had never known anyone with a bird??? the cracks are already beginning to show.... your one of these people who convinces themselvs of something then thats it eh? kind of person that talks so much crap that you start to believe it yourself?? but by all means please do prove me wrong... get your bird.. hunt it with success and keep us all filled in, the suspense is already killing me......bitch.

Number one, no text talk.

Number two, you've contradicted yourself by saying you've never known anyone with one.

Number three, you're rude and ignorant.

Number four, you won't get help off of any falconers with that attitude.

Number five, BOP take an awfull lot of time. You need to do ALOT of reading up and courses, also going out with falconers is good. Falconry is a VERY expencive and VERY time consuming sport. I have read up on BOP for at least a year, been on courses, etc. If you want help off of people, get some respect for others. By the sounds of it you couldn't organise a jumble sale, let alone a Hawk and a farm.

Foxys right ive wanted a hawk since i was ten and i have been learning all i can from falconers who i know i got my first this year and still did not know everything

I agree !! i've been learning for 6 years before i got mine ! and i'm still learning ! what you remember the most is the bird learns with you ! so if you make mistakes she will learn that and screaming will become a part of your bird ! but its true mate we all started somewhere ! but this is a wild bird :( maybe if you have given permission to falconers before they will take you out?
