my girlfriend had the dogs out yesterday for their morning walk. they were running around daft as always, in and out the small wooded part when my older lurcher bitch came back to her all gingerly. my girlfriend knew she was hurt so cut the walk short and she was limping back to car. she got them home and went to work. she came home at lunch time and the bitch hadnt moved off the couch, and same thing when they were let out at 3ish for the toilet. when i came home she came to greet me but wasnt putting any weight on it. i looked her over, there is no cuts no swelling and no yelping when i bend it or twist it or that but she will not put weight on it? i am giving her anti inflammateries and will give her to when i get home today and if shes no better i'll take her to the vet. but before i do i would be grateful if anyone who has had an experience like this to give me some suggestions?

thanks in advance

Ross

Tendon and or muscle damage: vet won't do any good other than to five anti-inflammatories and advice rest. Get dog to greyhound vet. Just because a dog doesn't yelp when you examine it doesn't mean it's not in pain. Deep seated dull pain doesn't make them yelp but the cause can be just as damaging if not more so than a stinging cut.

she's moving a lot better today putting weight on it al be it hobbling around, have decided it lies at the wrist of her front left, if i bend it shes not bothered but if i twist it slightly/gentlly she wimpers, dont know any greyhound vets around edinburgh so i will lay her off for a few weeks and take it from there.

thanks for your help

You've obviously found the problem: I'd say she has strained her wrist: hopfully not too badly. Wrist problems are bad news and can take a long long time to heal. If there is no heat or swelling around the wrist then it is just pulled ligaments not ruptured. Stand dog's leg in cold water a couple of times a day or run cold hose on it. No exercise at all except walking on lead. If you can get some Bone Radiol then brush it into the joint and around it, no more than twice a week: its very strong and acts as an irritant (in the past they used similar stuff to blister horses with tendon problems, but that was much more drastic). This brings blood to the area which will help to heal: put in a nutshell.

Best of luck: it could take a month, but I'd definitely keep the dog on a lead for that time: its very tempting to see that the dog is not lame at home, then take it out and run it for the lameness to return. Try Googling sprains and tendon damage: the same problem occurrs in humans with say, a sprained ankle.
