This only panics them. They end up hung up on the wire. That well used phrase...Softly Softly Catchee Monkey has always been my own personal mantra, and i adhere to the thought of ensuring the pup is mature enough before i have it jumping. Im not too macho to pick my pup over fences. I once owned a pup and didnt do any jumping with him until he was about 8 or even 9 months of age. This was a little experiment.Sure, he had negotiated a few obsticles, and i do believe country walks with others dogs are very beneficial to a pup, it gets them traversing all manner of things without even realising it. chester 147 Posted September 23, 2009 Report Share Posted September 23, 2009 the bitch i have in the other thred would not jump atall . i took her to a small fence waist high with no way no round put a old carpet over it as dogs will jump a sold obstical more willing than wire . get them use to it for a bit coming back and forth then when thay are confident and no looking drop the carpet call them over. word of warning put a bit of pipe lagging over the top strand just incase. then go round diffrent fences/gates and repeat the excercise till the dog has the confidece to jump any thing. this bitch would not come over 6 inch of wire to start with at over a year old. activeviii 8 Posted September 23, 2009 Report Share Posted September 23, 2009 start with a small jump, only need to be 6" high, put lead on pup and then you and pup run slowly at the jump and both you jump it. start small and over weeks or even months work you way up. before long pup will be over everything. i know mine isnt the same as its a cocker but he would jump to start with, i took my time and slowley built up the hight to the double haybail. he has no problems with this sort of hight. i dont need him to go higher yet so the double bails are good enough for now. only been doing it for 3 weeks so not bad for a year old pup.hehe Quote Link to post Share on other sites
