st3w4rt 0
Hi Guys, I took my Toby out for his walk this evening and the park we normally go to was absolutely heaving with dog walkers. Toby is pretty aggressive around other dogs so I try to keep him away from them as much as possible. We went into the field next to the park and I let him off the lead to have a wee run about. Off he went like a bullet and I saw about a dozen rabbits bolt to the hedge row. Next I herd a squeal and he ran off with a bunny. His recall was rubbish as he was far too interested in his catch. Eventually I got it off him, but only after I heard him crunching some ribs!! I made sure it was dead as I didn't want it to suffer anymore than it had to. The questions I have is, is it normal for the dog to bite the thing so hard that it breaks ribs? Is this a problem? And will it be hard to get him to stop it? Quote Link to post
Stuart O Connor 1
Same with my dog he used to cruch the ribs to kill it and wait next to it when he was younger but now hes ok ! Quote Link to post
JordKil 0
My collie does that all the time except he pins them to the ground and does it. I think hes just excited thats hes caught it as its a novelty for him to catch them when not ferreting. Ferreting hes better will attempt to retrieve but they dont get far so i just take it from him. st3w4rt 0
Thanks for your replys guys! Seems that its something that happens to many people with a young or new dog. We haven't went back to the field yet, so don't know what will happen next time. I think I should find out who owns the field first and ask if its ok to go back. I don't want anyone calling the farmer, or the cops, to say I'm a poacher or something!! I would like to stay within the law. Quote Link to post
