Out with Topgun1 for a go at the Foxes

Recommended Posts

Well i got an invite from Topgun to have a look out with him on the foxes on some land whats been having a few problems with them around the pheasants pens.

After picking me up we sorted out who was going to lamp and call in the foxes, which was my responsibility. Topgun was responsible for putting the cross hairs on them and shooting straight.

We arrived at the land at about 8.30ish we checked the lamp in the truck and it wasn't working!!! a quick look at the lightforce lamp revealed it had the typical problem of the wires coming aprt in the handle!!!. 10 minutes later it was fixed. Topgun explained where we would be going and where he wanted to look.

I decided to wind the window all the way down and sit on the window sill as the truck doesn't have a sunroof. It was like sitting on a razor blade!!!. We drove down hill to the first part alongside the main wood. I spotted a fox run into a small wood but he was never seen again!!

We got to the main wood and immediately spotted a fox, it was a little hesitant and disapeared. I started to call and after 5 minutes it appeared alongside some long grass it was just over a dip and topgun couldn't see it as i was 4' higher than him. I called it a little nearer and topgun took it out at about 70 yards off the sticks. We waited 5 minutes and picked the dog fox cub.

We travelled to another part of the shoot, this was much flatter stubble fields with cover crops, we got into the first field and i spotted a fox well out over 800 yds away. Topgun got the gun ready and i started calling, he came in like a train i had to shout to stop him at about 80yds as soon as i lifted the lamp on to it Topgun took it out the 50 grain .223 round connecting with it's engine room. I doubt it ever heard the bang. We picked this and had a 5 minute break, i took the brushes and we carried on. I spotted another fox along a hedgeline but it didn't want to know, we then went through into another field and i spotted another a good distance away, i tried calling it but it didn't want to know. I spent 10 minutes calling, it turned out to be a road sign some 1000 yards away!!!

We did another circuit of around the shoot we were just about to call it a day when i spotted another, this one just sat there and didn't respond to the call at all. It stopped looking at us at about 200 yards Topgun took it out with a single shot.

A good night thanks for asking me, It's nice to get out and do abit of good for the keeper. It's also nice to be out with someone who has trust in your abilities and who can shoot straight. 3 shots 3 kills..... You can't ask for better than that.....
