lofti 579
For any greyhound, their stomach is the door to their heart. Dont leave her food left out untouched. Only let her eat out of your hand. Let that be the only food she gets until she gains your trust. Change her food to something more enticing. Like for example open a fresh tin of sardines in front of her. She'll soon know that everytime you visit her it means good food. Leave the complete shit food for now. Its just not nice enough. Always carry around with you bits of fat and meat scraps in your pocket. Everytime you give her food say her name. When she gains more confidence around you, then start introducing the lead to her. Pulling her out will only make things worse for now. Make everything a positive experience for her. It can be very frustrating, especially for impatient people like myself, so everytime you feel loosing your temper, back off and take a few deep breaths. Nows not the time to be heavy handed. When she's taking food out of your hand confidently, thats a good time to start feeling her allover her; rubbing her sides and picking up her feet etc. Greyhounds learn its ok to piss in their own personal space so toilet training may take some time. Just give her praise whenever she pisses in the place you take her. Greyhounds aren't taught to learn obediance and training that a normal dog gets, so it takes a while for them to figure out what you mean. Simple commands such as sit and stay can take ages to teach them. Dont force the dog into what you want them to do. That can scare them. Sounds like you have a "feral" type of hound there; probably everything is completely new to her. Her fear/retreating is her way of protection. Dont take her to a place where she can escape. You wont get her back. Only let her off lead in a place that is completely enclosed and when she knows you are the food source. Recall is fairly easy. Find a food she really likes and keep it in a bag in your pocket. Everytime you call her name, shake the bag and she should run over to you at 40 miles an hour! Scary! Greyhounds are obsessed with food, thats all they think about. Use this to your advantage. Taking away her food bowl is your first step. You are her source of food now. You are her source of pleasure. Dont even think about taking her out lamping or hunting yet (or even ever)! You'll have a dead dog or one that has ran off on you. What height and weight is she, just curious? This will all take months, so dont expect immediate results. If its too much for you too handle, then consider passing her onto a good greyhound rehoming centre. Best of luck! now that is what you call good sound advice. Quote Link to post

Fantastic programme. The english lady, I forget her name but she's the one in the dominatrix boots. She took a greyhound that was having troubles like the one mentioned here, back to the kennels to be around some other greys. it helped bring it out of it's shell. Might be worth a try.
