Fat-Ferret 857
If you cannot get a tripod to it mate then the focusing rail will be useless. I only use it for the studio stuff. and its best to have a cable release to avoid shanke...if at all possible... speedgraphic sells them.. any chance of seeing some pics charley,, with the sigma.. wondered what it was like against [canon lenses] using the focusing rail and cable release.. maybe one day charlie......i will be getting a canon macro so it will be good to compare...... I will let you know charlie.. But, i will say for macro, flash is essential for good pics...JMHO>...JD I did try the Canon MP-E 65mm 2.8 1-5x Macro...Very good, But very expensive, Hence why I "Tried" it, I find the sigma equally as good though against canon equivalents. Hi FF. i dont think you can compare the two really. The canon lens can reproduce up to 5 times lifesize, but it is a specialist tool with only a limited use to the right people. A twin flash is recomended to get anything even resembling a decent pic. I should imagine the DOF is terrible!! I will be getting one for next spring i think. Although i only try to use canon lens's i must say the Sigma i have here is very sharp. For most of my freehand macro i use a flash set on 1/16th power and the F rating high... Even with that F rating i sometimes struggle with DOF. Experimenting with the flash has changed my photography technique. Hopefully more experimenting will produce better bird photos next spring. Its a bloody hard game to get the shots ytou require, and i think people are shocked when they go into Dixons, pick up a Digital SLR in its box, take it out and try to get the photos!! They end up with a blurred "dot" that you really cant tell if it is an animal of some dirt on the mirror!!! FF, why didnt you like the M65??? Or did you think it would be of limited use??? Cheers ...JD

There was a time when I would have taken the M65 even if it was for something specialist, But nowadays I try to make the best use of what I have rather chasing gear all the time, I find especially since digital a lot of people, And I am a culprit myself, get caught up in the chasing of lenses and pixels rather than taking pictures!
