i was just wondering how accurate can a experienced dog man be when it comes to ageing a unknown dog.

i know that condition of teeth can be a good guide but what do you really look for all round and what different traits refer to dogs age.

only asking because i have just got a terrier x approx 18 months old(so i been told lol )

any tips would be good cheers all

just to add im not questioning age of my dog just want info thanks

From looking at some old dogs I know and mates dogs ive noticed that when they are about 4 or 5 their muzzle starts to go more grey! My mothers jack russell is 7 and his muzzle is going grey and some of his eyelashes are going grey also. I think alot to do with it depends also on the breed of dog but I think apart from their teeth and their grey hair theres not much else you can tell of their age! but im no expert

read post mate..............experienced dog men

trouble with this site to many bullshit merchants

Twenty five years digging, worked for three different packs enough experience for you muppet, get a sense of humor TIT.

The only way to tell a dogs age accurately is his pedigree, every thing else is guess work !! Teeth ...coat...mannerisms , but you can get steady young dogs and gray coated young dogs, the only thing you can do is with experience put all the clues together and have a punt, as i said pure guess work.

THE BULLSHITER !!!

  • 2 weeks later...

my patterdale had a grey muzzle and eyebrows and ears at about 4 yrs old...as has been pointed out, dogs hair looses colour due to scars and bad/missing teeth can also be missleading due to working injuries...my bitch is now sixteen, and has been retired for quite some time, but apart from her back leg being skinny and a funny limp (due to a pin holding her hip together) she looks the same as she did at 6/7 yrs old...just not as active as shes now pretty much blind and deaf

i know with my terrier she '' felt old'' in the last 2 or 3 years of her life, she had grey in her muzzle from about 2 yrs old as did my lurcher , so i think in some cases it may be rather difficult
