Anyone got a method / recipe for tanning mole skin?

Depends how soft you need the skin after you have tanned it. If you want it soft like a chamois leather then you need to use allum which you can buy in kits from tinternet alternatively you can pin the skin out on a board and cover in fine sawdust for a day or so but this will leave the skin very stiff like plastic but then you can use oils to soften the skin if you need to but I don't bother when doing rabbit skins as the people who hAve em of me aint that bothered

Hope this helps a little

All the best 410 phil the mole

Ta 410phil.

Alum! I asked round and got given a box to play with. Two recipes were also offered, one, just sprinkle the alum on, the other, make a strong sticky paster and rub it in. I'm trying both, pics to follow! (p.s. nice site)

Cheers

When curing sheep skins or deer skins we used Allum and salt, paste on, scrape off, paste on, scrape off... any way, worked a treat. Supple skins well cured, very smelly though and quite caustic so wear gloves and don't rub your eyes!

Brain tanning and smoking works, but it's messy and a bit of work. I usually use Borax. Leaves the hide stiff as a board, which is fine as I mostly use them for tying fishing lures. Never tried Allum, thanks for the heads up that it's caustic.

dont know if this is true but was told you can use the brains for tanning. if so you waste not want not ;)

True,

Native Americans did it this way, the pelts were brained then smoked to finish the job off.

Then get your SQUAW to chew on it to get it supple :D:D
