Lee85 44
Anyone shoot mink at all? I bumped into a fella who was shooting the same permission as me and he mentioned he gets up early to shoot some mink on one of his permissions, I fancy giving it a go but i've never shot them and wouldn't know where to find them, apart from 'they live near rivers'? Been told there quite vicious . Anyone else had experiance? Edited July 27, 2009 by Lee85 Quote Link to post

We have a few Mink around the Okehampton side of Launceston in Cornwall, had shot these in the 100s back in the early 80s & 90s with shotgun or my 7.62 on the Chicken farms as they were takeing eggs & stock, but since 2000 onwards they seem to be more under control here, have shot them on odd occasions with .22 air rifle, but they are quite a sturdy critter so a shot in the head or behind the front legs works. I tend to leave them alone if they are in a remote area as there not enough for future sport where I am. foxon. Quote Link to post

foxon 0
A 7.62 for mink ......... you are not in the fur trade then are ye ? :) Hi Scuba, I know it sounds a bit ott but was out on the fox & deer as well, but as you have pointed out there was not much left in the way of fur, better to use a smaller calibre. foxon. foxon 0
right, to be honest with you if I were to see one i dunno if I would shoot it, I havent seen one so i'd feel a bit off doing it. on the other hand it's a new target If you have numbers of them where you are I would shoot them, they are a real pest, they trash egg farms & chicks, I have even seen a Mink remove a High Line full grown Chicken from it's run, they are very strong & return like a Fox if there is good feeding to be had, but sadly now the fur trade is no longer the Mink farms have all but gone, so the tree huggers have no more Mink to release for us Hunters to shoot, hope they release some more Boar it tastes better. foxon. Guest Scuba1
With boar you can take the 7.62 out for a play and still have something left over for the pot. Way better choice ATB Michael Quote Link to post
maty j 6
Vicious Is an understatement You can bait them up with rabbit guts, fish etc. Make sure you get a good shot, headshot on them as there tough! Quote Link to post
SEAN3513 7
we have a few around here, we normally trap them and then point blank 'em with the air rifle. much better way of controling them with an air rifle. and they dont sit still for long either.......and they are bloody fast !!!! cheers sean Edited July 27, 2009 by SEAN3513 Quote Link to post

We used to get paid for shooting them during the maize and corn harvest time as they could destroy a field in double quick time. We got 25 Marks for a tail and got to keep the pigs... happy days Quote Link to post

Guest Scuba1
The government paid for it. All we had to do was take the tails to the town hall and they would pay out in cash. It was 25 marks for a boar, 5 marks for a musk rat. I have not been back for some years now but heard that the numbers are down so far that the hunters pay to shoot them these days. Its worth it mind as the meat is great. When I cam over 3 month ago from Spain I stopped of at a friends place for 2 weeks and we did a bit of pig hunting then, but with dogs and then stick them. I had boar for two weeks solid. You can't beat a pig on the BBQ after running around chasing pigs all day. ATB Michael Quote Link to post
andyfr1968 772
About 20 years ago some 'do-gooders' broke into a mink farm a few miles up river from the estate where I worked. They released the f****es and within a few weeks, they'd killed pretty much all the other things on the river banks for miles. I took a lot out with my airgun at the time and they are one tough little MF'er. Head shot, then a follow up shot, or two.... Be careful with them. Cheers. Edit to say.. HW80, 22, Eley Wasps. 25 yards MAX!! Edited July 28, 2009 by andyfr1968 Quote Link to post
