robgriff1 4
Not bothered breeding ferts before, but lost a few to the terriers earlier this year and as I got 3 real nice jills left I mated them to a mates good black eyed silver hob. got 21 kits total & their eyes are just opening. What i want to know is whats the best food to start them on. they've been tucking into the jills mince already. Is it better to soak some dried food or maybe some tinned cat food, or just leave them have the mince. they just seem a bit young for it yet. got plenty of rabbits available too Quote Link to post
Kay 3,709
they should be having meat from 3 weeks old , rabbbits best Quote Link to post
masmiffy 82
I gave mine soaked dried food but they loved getting stuck into rabbit and pigeon. Gave it to em whole they just used to gnaw at it kept em quite for ages! Quote Link to post
robgriff1 4
Ta lads, thought as much. seems strange when you put mince in the hutch & 8 kits with eyes shut all stick their noses in the air & march towards the nice smell of grub! Read nonsense about giving them bread & milk or mushy grub but they seem ok on meat(and they got sharp teeth already!) They'll be getting rabbit, pigeon or squirrel from now on then. masmiffy 82
Hope all goes well mate mind 21 kits will eat loads! I had 16 one year and it was a full time job getting grub for em! Def dont give em bread and milk tho does em no good at all! Mine loved the dried stuff soaked in water. Quote Link to post
robgriff1 4
Just got a 10 kilo bag of dried stuff so plenty for a while. Dogs been picking off a few 3/4 grown rabbits lately so a good few in the freezer. I might need to get out with the lamp though!! When are they ready to go usually? 6 weeks old? Quote Link to post
The one 8,585
From about 3 weeks onward i start putting a bit of rabbit into the nest box then up to half a rabbit ,It stops them crawling out till there ready the only bad bit is you need to clean out the nest box a bit more often Quote Link to post

I personally think 6 weeks is a bit soon to let them go better 8 if you can do it but thats just my opinion Quote Link to post
Kay 3,709
Kits develop at differnt rates , let them go when there independent of there mother totally, racing about , eating drinking on there own kits huddled together in a corner & doing little else arnt ready to go to new homes in my opinion , see far to many in new homes with inexperienced owners left wondering what the hell to do with them when they should still be with there mothers Quote Link to post
aston_shooter 0
Mine have meat every week, at least once or twice, depends on whether I've been able to get out with the gun. I buy 10kg sacks of 'Ferret Feast' from the local pet shop as their regular feed, costs about 14 quid and is about 42% protein, it's good stuff and they love it. I've just got rid of a load of kits, but I kept 4 of them, they're about 10 weeks or so now. Quote Link to post
