tomandroz 0
Hi, We had our first baby arrive on Monday, both mum and baby are doing fine. We have tried to introduce both dogs to the new family member (Dogs are: BeddyxWhippet Bitch) and a (JRT dog) They were both great when we introduced them, and seemed pretty relaxed about the whole thing. We have continued to introduce them and socialise them as often as possible, but there behaviour is getting more bizare - they ave both taken to wrecking the garden, digging wholes, and ripping out plants (something either of them have never done before) also they have taken to eating shoes! again something they have never done before. and the most bizare thing the JRT has now decided to 'cock' his leg against the utility room door and relieve himself on an hourly basis ! This behaviour is so out of sorts for them, they are both very well behaved and sensible dogs, but since baby has arrived they have gone off the wall... has anyone else had the same thing happen to them? Cheers, Tom Quote Link to post
mandog 37
When my kids were born i would never let the dogs socialize with the baby. I would make it completely clear the baby is mine and they stay away, until the time was right then i would allow them to come over for a sniff, and as time goes on they would bond. I think your dogs knew there place was at the bottom of the pack and now you have introduced the baby to them and i think they think they are above the baby in the pack. That's why the strange behaviour. They know not to show signs of dominance over the baby yet there instincts are telling them otherwise. Quote Link to post
bird 10,014
No, but be [very careful] the dogs sound if they could be [jealous]. Make sure the dogs are always with a adult , when the baby is there. It might take awhile [6-8 weeks], keep an eye on it Quote Link to post

Sully 3
Your not daft mate and Im not gonna sit on here saying dont do this do that, you know the score with regards dogs and babies, with what your saying it seams to me like they (dogs) are marking their territory and are showing exitable behaviour, it's a worrying time but im sure if you use your brain and dont rush things you'll they'll be just fine, ATB Craig Quote Link to post
Guest lurchers&terriers
Might sound silly mate but you need to include them insted of excludeing them. If you exclude them and keep hushing them away they become more curious and jelous and that will cause problems. Quote Link to post
welshshrek 0
Hi tom, it does sound as if your dogs are playing up because they feel a little jealous/neglected of your new arrival (congratulations) and therefore are trying to get your attention they are playing up ... when i has my son and daughter i'd allow my dogs to continue as normal as part of the family, but i did kept an eye on them when around the kids for the first couple of months just to make sure. Now my 2x jrt's can often be found by my sons side and who are very protective of both my kids. It's as people say, you know your own animal. ! atb Quote Link to post
