Guest Chip
limited experience lads but, I have two started last season on different occasions neither had seen a stop end. i agree with busterdog in a sense a lot can be done with pups from an early age and that its not a must to have an older dog to get them started. i let these two rag dead fox from 9/10weeks on, hidden tails under slabs then let them use there nose to find them then dig them out, some may laugh but it was great fun. 7/8 months old around holes they were choking to get in,trick is not to get carried away with this and think there ready... are you lads of the opinion that that regardless of wether a young dog will self enter its better to let them see a stop end or two? smasher 1,055
Most of the best terriers i have seen over the years were all self entered ie.that is to say they wanted to go them selves and did'nt need to be coaxed or shown stuff in a stop end or on the sod, thats not to say,let them on just because they want to go,you'll have to use your head and hold em off until you think there ready and able, just remember a lot of dogs that are easy to enter, are easy to ruin.one story that springs to mind is a nuttall/cowan bitch i had about 18 years ago, while out and about with the dogs one day slipped to ground in an earth we did'nt know about, she was only 5 mounths old,she was never seen again Quote Link to post

Guest busterdog
Read my reply properly tit, i said i "keep the pups on the lead" and no i have never felt the nead to stop end. I don't enter mine to quarry untill they are mentaly mature, wich will be diferent in every pup in your yard, usualy around 13-14 months old. Edited to say.. Just read the other reply "cant buy expeiriance in aldi" WTF do you even own a working dog or do you just come on here talking shit. In what way does having a working dog on the bank help, i have never failed to enter a pup in my life. I dont..... cant say i havent had a fialure, some will enter but not make the grade, like i say its in the hands of them and god, you can't put in what god left out. the monkey slayer 1
you could have the keenst dog in the world, if you enter it wrong and its get a hammering it may not been as keen to go next time. stop ends and leaving a vixon back in a small earth e.g easy digs just to bring a young dog on will do it no harm at all. after all you have waited long enuff to enter it Quote Link to post
