Ratreeper 441
If a terrier can nip in and out of a warren, why do we use ferrets? A terrier will retrieve them back. How small does a terrier need to be to work with ferrets, or instead of ferrets at all. Quote Link to post
rizla1 122
it needs to be as small as a ferret Quote Link to post
deadlock 0
It would never be small enough so you would end up digging it out every five minutes Quote Link to post
countrymaid 2
Ive got a chihuahua cross Jack russel who is no bigger then a guinea pig but she is hard little bitch that will take on anything. But yes ive often wondered if you had a small enough terrier that can retrieve why use a ferret. I just wish i could upload photo's onto this web site as id love you all to see this bitch of ours, she has the looks of a chihuahua but the attitude of a JR and she is no way a handbag dog!! Ratreeper 441
I posted because i just got made redundant, and i have been volunteering walking dogs at a rescue and had great fun with a tiny little terrier. He was crying to get down rabbit holes, and when we walked past one i didn't see in the grass i ended up dragging him back out. I never thought he would fit but it reminded me of an ad i saw a while ago. Someone was selling 'ferret terriers', just very small terriers he claimed were better than ferrets and small enough to run through th holes? I have to admit, after walking that terrier i want to take him home and go dig some bunnies Quote Link to post

No dog, no matter how small, will be able to manage the burrows and warrens a rabbit occupies, sooner or later your dog WILL come a cropper and get stuck. Trapped underground in such a tight place, even if you have a shovel, could lead to a very unpleasant death. As said before, for bolting rabbits, stick with ferrets! If you have a terrier that is mad keen to get to ground seek some permission and try it on sommat bigger! If that don't float its boat, digging for rats is a great way to go but for fecks sake keep it away from entering rabbit holes!! Quote Link to post
