it would also help if people bought the right dog for there needs, you dont go out and buy a saluki cross if you just want to do a bit of ferreting or a small whippet cross to go coursing (PREBAN) start out with the right dog for the job and thats half the battle a bit of patience and alot of time you will have a good dog in the making just my opinion though

And a good one mate. Some people think a dog will be an all rounder. Fools and when it is not off it gose to some outher fool. Then most are past from piller to post and then are found tyed to some tree dead or starving. And we ask ourself how we get bad press. Catcher 1

Keano that was a wind up that I would want to use your dog as stud and like a lot of wind ups that s directed at you it just goes right over your head

I have access to some true proper working terriers and lurchers owned and worked by honest lads with high standards up and down the country if I wanted ...

Catcher you know nothing about how I treaat or train my dogs but I can assure you and others will tell you my dogs want for nothing but I will stand by what I say that some dogs just dont have it no matter how much time you put into it and breeding average dogs goes agaianst everything I stand for and everything ive learned .

Undistputed a dog will be given plenty of chances but if it doesnt make it then the right thing will be done .

Thats all im going to say on the matter .

Beginning to think you and wilfy are masons everything is so kryptic with the pair of you.....you banged on at Keano for an answer to your question so why wont you answer mine?.....given you've got so much disregard for folk on this site (unless your in that elusive 5%)why do you hang about? why bother commenting on posts? Your obviously the resident expert yet I've never seen one constructive post from you in relation to offering advice to anyone in here,,,,just like your alter ego its nothing but criticism. :whistling:

I was once told by a good dog man now sadly passed away that there was no such things as expert lurcher men as every dog was different and the sport whatever quarry you pursued was never the same as every course, dig or nights lamping whatever was always different but i take it that MOO and Wilf are the exceptions to this as they seem to be the foremost authorities on the subject.

Out of curiousity Moo whats with the winding up and provoking Keano on here when at Neilston you couldn't have been any nicer when you met him?Are you one of those keyboard supermen who think they are best thing since sliced bread once they get behind a keyboard?

Finding and staying carnt be train with terriers it in the breeding
sorry to disagree mate but a dog can be trained to find but it down to the dog to have the determination (gameness) to stay until you get to him now that cannot be trained i believe if it could there would be more ouystanding dogs than bad ones atb

Having had dogs of various sorts over the last 45 years. I feel I may be able to give an impartial opinion here. Having read all of the thread there have been some good points made on both sides.

Breeding will usually tell but not always. I bought a pup of a mod on this site too many years ago to want to remember. I went to him as he had a very good working bitch crossed with a very good dog. Now that litter produced some cracking workers and obedience dogs.

The pup had nearly all the attributes that anyone would look for in a pup, bar for one, it was just too keen! It could never work out how to work a rabbit it just went full out all the time. It had two speeds full throttle and stop. In the end that’s what killed him, the rabbit seen the pipe he did not, bang, one dead dog.

The first running dog I ever owned was from a mate’s whippet crossed with a bitza running dog, there was a bit of everything in the sires background from bull terrier whippet greyhound even a bit of saluki way back, but the dog caught rabbits.

The pup was slow to enter and by the time he was 2 had only caught a couple of rabbits, but as it was my first running dog I would not give up. By the time he was three he was catching double figures a night by the time he was 4 he was regularly taking well into the 20's.

Good breeding should give you an advantage, however if you do not have the skill to take advantage of that, do not blame the dog. Be as honest as you can with yourself and look what you are doing wrong. Pushing a dog when it is not ready is a recipe for disaster, pushing a dog when it is ready will get you a better dog.

In my eyes people who have never had a dog before can go out and buy pup. They do not have a clue how to deal with a pup, they know nothing of how a dog thinks, they have no idea of how to socialise a pup, in fact they know Fec all about dogs and expect to turn out a top class worker without any work.

Personally I blame the numbers game, they come on this and other internet forums and read of dogs doing this at that age and my dog has taken x amount and he is only 6 months old and they believe it. They then think that every dog should be doing the same thing. When the dog does not do it they then get rid and start the ruination of another dog all over again.

Just my honest opinion.
