owen 11
its each to ther own i think as long as your happy with your own dogs work rate, quarry, performanceit dosnt matter if your out digging every weekend or ratting or just bushing to lurchers a working dog is a working dog at the end of the day thats my thorts on it any way atb adam couldnt of put it any better Quote Link to post
Guest MickyB
MY OPINIONS! Theres a lot of replies stating 'its a good worker if it does what is expected of it'.... for me it dosent cut it, Maybe for a lurcher or other working dogs BUT not a terrier. To me a -TRUE WORKING TERRIER- is a terrier that can be relied upon to find in any place including huge setts, rock piles, crags, peat-runners, bales or wherever the quarry may be. If the quarry dont bolt, the terrier MUST stay until we breakthrough. And thats it!!! Mine will work lots of rats, and before the ban would hunt mink and feral cat through the summer to keep them busy, but this is simply a bit of pest control, and not what a true working terrier is for. To me any dog should do this sort of work. Cheers lads and lasses Happy Hunting Quote Link to post
goldfinch2007 2,337
come on lancer, sure you got plenty to say on this matter. a good dog is a dog that will do what you want it to do each time you use it; so if your bolting foxes to guns,is that a worker?but if it wont bolt it stays till dug?surely a working terrier. Guest rodsmith
everybody has there own expectations on terriers,so long as they do what you want of them then you should be happy, but of course not all make the grade! well said Matt11 thats what i put on my topic to do with scaring.i said as long as your happy how your dog works and it does that job to your own grade then fu*k what others think!! Guest rodsmith
i start mine off on rats at a young age.i dont work them to rats once they start working them to fox for my own personal reasons as dont want to start another debate. throughout the summer and winter my terriers will kill cats, ive an estate over run with the bloody things,id sooner kill a cat than a fox. id sooner move a fox to an area it wont cause problems so hopefully i can work it another day. regarding mink,i dont look for them now but i did as i helped out our pack by doing the terrier work for 3 seasons. yes,if the fox does not bolt,id exspect any terrier to stay with that fox.i for one would NOT be going home with any terrier that comes away(JACKS)from its quarry, that terrier would be staying under the ground for good!!! ive been out with alot of well known terriermen with some very good terriers but ive also seen some of these terriers come away for reasons unknown. EVERY DOG HAS ITS DAY!!!!!!! Quote Link to post
ssssh1forthepot 0
In my opinon a ''working terrier'' is one that works on whatever quarry its owner chooses it to. It should give 100% to the task its given whatever that may be.People want different things from the dogs, whether it be for fox control, ratting, bushing, whatever as long as its out there doing something and not sat at home only been taken out for the occasional walk round the park because if that was the case it would be a pet and not a worker. I know some lads will probably slate me for this but its just my opinion. Quote Link to post
winnie 1
Be honest about what you keep, if you are very happy with it then good. But remember, life is too short to waste time on wankers. Quote Link to post

Guest rodsmith
a WORKING terrier is a terrier that works below ground, staying til dug or vermin bolts.anything else is a SPORTING terrier. Quote Link to post

I totally disagree and class my terriers as working as they are doing a pest control job for a farmer, And not all dogs will kill a rat seen a few which run the other way. The only people on here that will agree with you are the ones who think the same because they only use there dogs on fox!!! Quote Link to post
