Hi all, I am currently going though the process of getting my 6 month old pup to retrieve to hand effectively which (in the main) is going fairly well following the trial and error of various methods of training. I have found that the most effective method that I have used so far is to give my pup a small treat when he brings the dummy back to me. This however has come with a small problem - the pup is anticipating the treat and dropping the dummy short of me and coming to collect his reward. I will sometimes walk backwards to encourage him to keep hold of it which sometimes works but
  3. Hi there, I'm new to the forum. I currently have a pedigree whippet pup who I am taking through his basic training. I am new to whippets, Lurchers and hunting in general but I have spent the last 6 months dedicating pretty much ALL of my spare time to reading about hunting with hounds (of all kinds) and have an unclench able thirst for knowledge in this area. My Fiances family are into hunting and are invited onto shoots in the hunting season which is something that I'll me inevitably be drawn into over time.   4. Hi there. I am currently putting my whippet pup through basic training which is going well and I am looking for advice on a good age to enter him to the 'world of work'. He is 6 months old and with the season just around the corner I am starting to think that I might enter him this winter however some advice suggests that you should wait 14 months whereas other advice states that 8 months is okay. This is my first whippet and I want to do the best thing possible with regard to training as I believe that some that if entered too early they can open up and form bad habits. I don't
