Hi just wondered if anyone had a hob vasectomised lately and could give a rough idea of costs? Is it a procedure any vet practice will carry out or are you best of going to somewhere that specialises in this sort of thing?

I intend to breed my hob and jill when she comes season, to keep a Jill for myself and I’d have homes for any spare. Then I think I’d like to have him done and let them have run of a court together all year round.

Just to add, if anyone has had one done or knew of a vets they’d recommend for doing it in the north east please let me know.

    Many Thanks CC

I got quoted between £160 and £380 in Plymouth

went with the £160 they phoned me and said “we have put your ferret under and now shaved the area and found he has one big ball”

I said that’s handy is that half price ?

they said “no same price but if we do it he has one ball inside probably producing semen if you want that one doing it’s around £800”

needless to say he came back with his balls intact and his bikini line shaved and they charged me £75 for a pube shave and anesthetic

    Didn't @BULL end up with Remus , maybe I'm wrong 🤷‍♂️

@South hams hunter  would know as I'm sure the litter I'm thinking of was by Remus.

a pup is out of a bitch and by a dog ..

So nothing is out of Remus 🤪

Hello chid been a few years

I don’t get on here from one year to the next , but popped on yesterday tried to leave a reply.

Rio was a half brother to Remus same sire (bull) he was a good all rounder but no good with stock of any kind.

Remus and Rio were bred and owned by HBG , Both dogs were kept and brought on by HBG who eventually chose Remus over Rio which is how Rio ended up down here. (Rios now dead)

I was impressed by Rio, but heard Remus was the better dog .

Remus was bred to Rio’s litter sister half brother half sister mating I had to have one

I had a black bitch and x2 more went to people I knew we were all over the moon with them they were half crosses 2nd generation @Backandbeyond but  we’re very racy and light for a bull x.

the bitch I had from that litter was the best bitch I owned. She was never bred ( wish I did though) and died 2 years ago

Weight wise Rio was at his best at 56-60lb

The bitch I had was 49lb-52lb fit

HBG had some cracking dogs and would be the one to talk too if he still comes on here

  3. Well what a week ferrets are 6 weeks old started the kits on raw meat same I feed my dog after a few days kits started dieing 2-3 a day

turns out the raw beef was recalled due to salmonella stopped the raw and the rest survived lost 10 kits fuming

9 left though but such a shame

    never heard of this before

  4. Some of these micros are ridiculously small , size of weasel weigh 150g really strange to see , not much good for working at that size.

ones I keep are all working well.

there larger end of the micro and weigh between 450-650grams size wise they are between a stoat size and a small standard Jill size ferret.

the micro x standards are not much different than pure micro in weight but look longer and thinner imo , the best working female I have is a micro x standard she weighs about 580g

Best male I have is s pure micro .

  5. I will have micro litter and micro cross litter this season looks like both are pregnant due next couple of weeks

good workers had a great season with them

if you can get to Devon your welcome to 1 from each litter , once we have picked what we are keeping

  6. Nice to get out Hardley anything bolting plenty of digging and lots of young ones and does that’s me done for the season .

really enjoyed this season nice getting back into hunting again

concentrate on training the pup and breeding the ferrets and bit of shooting now

  7. My Jill’s came in Feb last year hoping they hold off a bit longer this year .

working them this weekend after that think I’ll  try leave it as long as possible as mine are out in the run together in the day put em away in the night .

I reckon I got two weeks tops before the Jill’s are in and I have to separate

  8. I think the real small ones would struggle I used a large end micro 500g he covered a few standards last year no problem

half micros are just like a small standards shouldn’t be a problem at all

I bred some half micros last year cracking ferrets out performed my standards easily.

  9. I’m in the west country and if anything I’ve seen an increase in rabbits over the last few years in 90% of the places we go.

one bit of permission is completely devoid of rabbits not sure if it’s been hit by this or just completely played out as everyone has permission there but this is the only year I’ve seen nothing.

I like the name Fitchy mate we used to call all polecat ferrets Fitchy.

My mate has the smallest ferret I've seem I'm looking after at the moment it just never grew it's a sister to my five year old one. She it about 550 grams the little one about 280 grams and loosing its coat, I'm feeding it up poor f***ing thing looks skinny as f**k. It's a pain in the ass working can't shift the stubborn ones but won't leave them either. Crap at coming out to hand shy go to pick it up just goes back in, does my head in.

Not sure how it would fare against a big rat.

    Cheers Arry

I have had ferrets off and on  was never massively into it like some always had standards got back into them 3ish years ago had the smaller ones for a year and kits this year I really like em and they have been doing ok

Gonna be doing a fair bit with them this year so I’ll let you know how they get on

Runt x runt, there just another fad like the fancy colours, angoras, eu polecats

I wouldn’t agree as various reasons you get runts and genetically the size may not be passed on by a runt

I agree it’s a fad but can only speak on what I’ve seen and the large micro I thought were great little workers

  12. There seems to be a debate on what an actual micro is on the micro forums but I’ve seen some like hamsters weighing 150grams I swapped one for one of my kits and it was tiny the other ferrets tried to kill it on sight . I gave it back to the breeder .( it was the size of a 6 week old kit at 6 months) it had no prey drive or natural drive to go into tunnels tubes or dig weird.

that said I’ve got some larger types that work very well they are around 400-500 grams bolt rabbits well walk right through the nets

half micros are lively type like the old fitchy or weasel ferrets around 500 - 700g

i really like them and they work better than my standards very fast bags of energy and good prey drive
