As Charlie caller said have a word with the feo first but I would stick with a sub 12footpound air rifle as apposed to an FAC one, both .22lr and 17hmr are great rifles and both offer something that slight bit different than the other..i'll give you an example. Hot summer days when those pesky rabbits are out in numbers and you need to take a few quietly and get in close in certain times you can dispatch with the 22lr semi auto easier. But then the heavier rifle which is more accurate , less affected by drop but more affected by wind and quite a bit louder permitting the circumstances will u

spending the time down the range/field using large amounts of ammo/cash just to justify to them why we have reason to keep our Fac's and if not used up to the amount that is satisfactory in they're eyes is ridiculous but sadly that's how they look at it, that being said if they took the time and effort to read peoples purchase then they'd probably find out that all tickets accumilated would come to the equivilant of a country the size of China with the same population but all consisting in game animals being wiped from this earth lol

Its not lying if he has genuine intentions to shoot rabbit or foxes as stated but lacks the knowledge to know the information that others do know, I can also see how this can be misconstrewed as someone who is looking for any excuse to own a firearm aswell.

Mmmm the big question, well you have land and that is more than most but as you seem undecided which would be best suited many peoples view will vary as will there results. 1.A rimfire of .22lr or 17Hmr or even both for rabbits and fox 2. an air rifle for rats or birds out of trees (permitting the conditions available) which could also be used in places which make the rimmies use questionable...no one rifle will do all but the choice is yours.

Ha ha.. I mean Jackie drakeford, dont know why that stuck in my head.

After I held mine for 5 years on my second certificate I received an open whilst enquiring about it the the feo, I was told by him that you build a portfolio of your history with firearms (papertrail) and in doing so proved you are safe and have had no problems with this so restrictions lifted. But you can apply after shorter periods of time like 10 months as said above..the only advice I can say is get out there and hunt the nuts out of it and they will see from the amount of ammunition you go through on you ticket.

Yes very true as said above, if you put target they assume you will want to do genuine target range work with a club, put in for vermin and pest control ...the feo will know you will need to zero at a range or even on the land that you have permission on.

Would be interested to see how you get on, any other questions or queries feel free to ask. Being that your using an air rifle I would use targets at varying ranges in practice just too get the idea of the drop over the varying distances, not teaching you how too suck eggs as im sure you know what to do i think it just helps to emphasize this as you will be sat prone , crouched or kneilling so you'll see them appear from surrounding warren entrances which can be more than 50m away and in some cases 100m's away.

If you are able to get hold of the book Rabbit control by Jackie Collins (eBay) the info is invaluable and designed for us small game hunters.

Walk the land in the evenings/mornings looking for signs of droppings and runs that they use, once spotted or found where the are they will always return even after disturbance (gunshots). Laying in ambush is your best bet and from 4-9 pm I have found is the best time for me but this may be different for you...rabbits have poor depth perception so if you move slow and low to the ground you can get up close to them (within a couple of yards), practise makes perfect and it will take time to become efficient at this but also take time to single out where they are...be patient and good luck!

Sadly its about what and who you know, this can be a real pain in the ass for someone who's just starting out and shows an interest in fieldsports. One other option is to join or attend a shooting/target range as a walk in member and have a word with some of the members, joining to learn the info from other members and to learn the basic marksmanship principles and general firearm safety is paramount...who knows you may have an opportunity to go out with someone who is Willing to teach you. Dont forget to keep doorknocking and do get insurance possibly BASC would be more of an option for you

Cz 455 Varmint Or Savage Arms At Syn
celticrusader replied to doie1's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
Couldn't agree more guys..got my cz455 17hmr with thumbhole about 2 yrs ago and I'm really impressed with the quality and accuracy, and when I need a bit more silence and a quicker follow up I use my Brno 581have both have proven to be the right tool for the job on many different occasions. -
All very good advice above, have you thought of going to a range and speaking to some of the shooters to see if you could have a go on one of they're hmr's to see if the rifle is suited for your needs...since your willing to travel severnside range in roggiet just off the M4 in south wales just as you cross over the bridge has a friendly atmosphere and I'm sure someone there would be willing to help out.

Views on the .204 Ruger for rabbiting
celticrusader replied to matthill01's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
Since i'm new to this site and i've managed to jump onto the back of matthill01's original post so i want to thank you guys for your honest replies and opinions. Where i currently shoot there isnt much rabbits in numbers and what little are there seems to be spread out across the varying landscape but what you guys have said has only reinforced what i've already been thinking and that we all know what it's like to be out in the field with the wrong tool in hand at the wrong time and this must surely be the case for the ever widening search of the ONE JOB FOR ALL rifle that always seems to- 26 replies

I've been pidgeon shooting for about 15 years now and my preferred gun was a pump action believe it or not, reason being is i had a remington 1100 semi auto 3 shot and although shot cycling was quicker reloading wasnt, if you fired off the third round you had to load two into the magazine cock the lever and load one into chamber and then load another into the magazine making the semi auto more of a two shot. I've also mainly used 6 1/2 size shot for woodies and over the years i've been able to get close enough to take 5 foxes with the old stevens model 65e which sadly is still broken after tr

Views on the .204 Ruger for rabbiting
celticrusader posted a topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
I was actually thinking the same thing, is there another alternative to the .17hmr which offers great accuracy over longer range, less effected by the wind and does no more damage to the meat?. As i have no experience with the 22 or 17 hornets and neither the 17 remington or fireballs i can understand that there may be varied factors to take into account and reloading being one in favour, so if someone like myself or another person thinking of changing calibre would the types calibre's i've stated be viable options, i know that you always end up sacrificing in one way or another. almost f- 26 replies

Decent Affordable Semi Auto 22
celticrusader replied to deerhunter25's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
i bought a brno 581 which is the older version of the cz 511 and i wouldnt say they're ugly rifles at all, two screws and a complete take down..built very solid and small and light enough to carry round all day...only cost me £100 for the rifle but if you are interested in them do your home work first as magazines are hard to come by and parts are not as readily available as most semi auto's may be. -
Anshcutz Or Ruger 10/22 ?
celticrusader replied to Tornado1979's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
Well to be honest guys it all depends on the job at hand and the land you shoot on, i got a brno 22lr semi auto with 3 extra 8 shot mags..abit picky on the ammo at first like most semi auto's but i found it works best with eley subs, nice and light and very short which means i can get in close and not be worried about the sound when taking repeat shots at a few bunnies. Then i also have a cz 455 thumbhole 17hmr for longer distance shots when when sound is no problem, took 2 yesterday on 2 different fields both sat in the open on there own, the first buck at 115yrds and the second was a young
