  2. Thank you for the offer Sussex!!! I'll see about ordering direct but if I hit any snags I might take you up on that and I'll pay you in advance of course.
  3. I found sealskinz.com but I see quite a variety of gloves there. Which ones do you have? If they ship overseas I'd like to try them.
  4. A few years back my brother John invited me along on a cull hunt for whitetails. The land owner said take every deer that we could off the property. The population was out of control in his county and posing a hazard to motorists as well as causing enormous crop damage. It was a cold day. The temperature was well below freezing and everything was covered in ice. John took me to a fence row and suggested that I climb up to a high seat which he pointed out. It was a tiny wooden platform built in the crotch of tree about 20 feet up. The "ladder" was a series of steel bars driven into th
  5. You gents are making me jealous.
  6. Have you ever had a day of hunting where you couldn't even get a glimpse of a deer but still really enjoyed your hunting? That was today. Took my 10 year old son to try for his first deer. We're still having unseasonably warm weather. 43 deg F when we set out this morning and up to 68 this afternoon. Arrived at the property before dawn. Still-hunted for a while from a ground blind on a 200 yard long shooting lane in thick cover but saw nothing. Not even a rabbit or squirrel. Then stalked a while and still saw nothing but enjoyed showing my son the scrapes and rubs and him pointing o
  7. I'm afraid your biggest problem will be getting the poacher to leave them alone. I had that problem a few years ago on some property owned by my wife's family. I couldn't solve it and gave up hunting there. I knew who the poacher was and he's gone now so maybe I will try the land again next season. When he was around I was afraid I might get shot myself. Chased him out of the woods one time screaming at him. Hate to lose my temper but he deserved it. My wife's family wouldn't even try to keep him out. They live on the property and were afraid he might do something drastic if they took
  8. Welcome Rich! I'm new here myself but enjoying it and sure you will as well.
  9. I hadn't thought of that Gloop. Not proficient enough in ballistics I guess. That's one of the reasons I joined this forum. I think I'll order 3 or 4 different loads and spend some time on the firing range to see which suits best trajectory wise. Then I'll have to wait until next fall when the seasons back in to see if it has as much knock down power as I hope with deer. In the mean time I'll look for an opportunity to try it out on coyotes or bobcats.
  10. Around here tall branch free trees are no problem. We have thousands of slash pines, loblolly pines, and long leaf pines whose first branch is often 40 ft up or more. Also quite a few hickories that have lost all of the lower limbs with age. Pines are the first choice because the teeth on the climber bite into the soft bark and soft wood so well. The hardwoods are OK if no pines available where you want to hunt as long as the trunk is not icy . Trying to climb an icy trunk and stay up it for hours can be a little nerve racking, especially on a windy day. When hunting alone I almost alway
  11. In this part of the country it's too hot from May to October to even want to deer hunt. We just go fishing then anyway. If I had the climate and season to hunt deer all year my yard would look like a jungle, my house would be in disrepair and my wife would leave me.
  12. Last year that was bucks and does. This year they shortened the doe season. In my area does didn't come in until mid December. Squirrel and rabbit are in season from late October until end of Feb. No pronghorns or muleys here. You have to go far west of here for those. Not sure what the seasons are. Varies by state. I think you can hunt hogs year round but I've never tried it. One of my brothers has 2 dogs that he worked on hogs up until last year and he loved it. Then he got his captains license and started running salt water fishing charters and didn't have time for hogs anymore. H
  13. Quite an amateur myself but love bay fishing for specks and spanish on my brothers tandem sit on top. Had a little shark making a pest of himself last time but went on his way after I hit him in the head with my paddle. Brother took my son out last May about a mile in Gulf of Mexico and son came back with a 16 lb king mackerel. Never seen him happier. Total strangers were coming down the beach to take his picture with that fish. Never have to worry will the motor crank if you fish the yak. Happy fishing!
  14. Found a deal on a Winchester 243 model 70 today that I couldn't pass up. Never owned a 243 before. This one takes only super shorts. I see quite a few options on ammo for this gun. I'll be using it for deer up to about 300 yards. Any advice on what grain to go with? I'm leaning toward 95 grain for knock-down power but looks like a lighter load shoots a little flatter of course. Anyone care to share your experience with this one?
  15. Bow season is from mid October until January 31. Gun season runs from about November 21 until January 31. By the way, my son's doe weighed 96 lbs after field dressing. Took my 10 year old son this afternoon. Slipped out of the office a little early to dash off to the woods for a short hunt. No luck but nice day to be out. Unseasonably warm at 60 deg F when we arrived. I'll be stuck working all day tomorrow. Will try again Saturday morning. If my son can bag his first Saturday AM then I'll have a little season left to take my climber out on a scrape line to try for a good buck fo
  16. It's been a good week here in the southeast U.S. for whitetails. Last Thursday I took my 15 year old son out on a morning hunt. About 7 am it was just full light and we were walking to our stand when a nice big doe stepped out at 90 yds. I told my son he could take the doe if he wanted as the farmer told us to shoot anything or he could wait for a buck. Youth and enthusiasm being what they are he opted to try for the one in front of him and made his shot. She spun around just as he fired and vanished in the thick young pines and briars. Thinking he had missed his shot I made a rookie mis
  17. Today I hunted a property for the first time. It was a swap deal with a local farmer in which he got to plant soy beans on our land in exchange for hunting priveleges on his land. I chose my spot today to sit in the rain, sleet, snow mix by the good fresh rubs that I found on 2 saplings. I am hunting whitetails in the U.S. and haven't had the pleasure of hunting red deer...yet. (Did not see the buck responsible today, by the way, but intend to be back again in the morning.) Do red stags rub their antlers on saplings to polish them and mark territory the way whitetails do?
  18. Thanks for the warm reception folks. As to the weather here, not so nice at the moment but hunting in any weather is better than being in the office so I spent the day in the woods in spite of the weather. I'll say a bit more about that in the deer hunting section but the gist is...came home empty handed this time.
  19. In 2010 I decided my daughter, then 11 yrs old, was ready to handle the rifle under close supervision. I took her along to the hunting club several times in November and December in all kinds of weather but we just couldn't seem to be in the right place at the right time. We would sit in elevated shooting houses and view does and young bucks 500 yds off but nothing in range of my 30-30. For her first shot I wanted close range anyway. Finally in late January we were sitting in a box stand on a hill overlooking a greenfield of wheat when 4 whitetail does came out of the woods at about 110 yd
  20. Hello everyone. I live in Alabama in the U.S. I've enjoyed online videos of UK hunts and decided to look for a good forum to swap hunting stories with enthusiasts and if my budget ever allows for the travelling maybe swap some hunts as well.
