  1. Hey mate we all good just full of that bloody cold! Fair play my fao said I can have almost what I want after he saw what ground I had and the stock about.
  2. I understand what has been said about rounds such as 22-250 and 243 and I know they are very good as I have friends who shoot these rounds, but I just think for what I need they may be a bit of a over kill. Kind of like owning a sports car but never doing more than 30 mph in it if that makes sense. That's why I sort of thought 17 hornet?
  3. Thank you for all the help, although I said I,m not a great shot I,m not that bad! What I should have said maybe is that I just get a bit lost in all the facts and figures with different rounds. All I,m after is a nice and simple to set up ( zero in ) rifle that can do for the odd fox and crow, a point and shoot round if there is such a thing. Thanks again for the help
  4. Please don,t think I,m taking the piss but the range depends on how close the fox is!! To be honest as most the time the rifle will be in the truck or on the quad with me as I,m going round the lambing fields it is mainly foxes that I bump into or catch out so most of the time they are within 200 yards
  5. I totally agree and would never treat any caliber with out respect.
  6. Thank you for the replies I should say that ammo cost doesn't worry me to much as I will not be useing to much as I use the .22 for most things and work help out with buying bullets. The only reason I was looking at the 17 hornet is because it is suppose to be a bit quietier and I didn't want anything to big as I may be shooting near stock
  7. Hello I would like to ask people's advise on what fox round to get. I currently shot a .22rf for rabbits. I work as a shepherd on a large out door lambing flock (3000 ewes) and foxes can be a real pain. I will be mainly shooting early in the morning and at dusk but not to much lamping as after a long day at work I like to sleep at night!! I am not the best shot in the world so am after a round that is easy to zero in as this rifle will be a work tool more than a hobby. At times I may need to take shots in lambing fields with ewes in I was looking at the 17 hornet. Thank you for any help you c
  8. Great photos and the dogs are a credit to you
  9. I had a 2003 reg one as a work truck and it did me proud never missed a beat and as most farm trucks do it took some stick. Just watch out on the older ones as rust can de a problem.
  10. I have been out with the ferrets a bit this year and was just wondering if there was anyone else out and about around where I go. No reason, it,s just that I have meet other people who shoot in the area ( helps my old mans a keeper) and i know most the lads who run dogs but never run into anyone ferreting. I,m nere Wantage in Oxfordshire.
  11. Sorry just a post to have a quick moan. I live by some big open arable land on the downs and over the weekend some lads have been out driving the fields makeing a right mess just to get a slip on the hares. The problem I have is the police are hot enough at the moment and for the first time I have to take permission letters out with me as they are stopping anyone with a running dog. Now I,m not saying I am some sort of a saint as like a lot of lads I,ve done my share of fence jumping but crap like these lads have done just makes trouble for everyone and they have no respect for the game they r
  12. To be honest the nets I made aren,t flash by any means and all I do is tie them to either fence so they just hang there as long as they stop the rabbit long enough for the dog to get there
  13. I was given a ripped up and tangled 25yd long net a while ago and it has just sat in the shed, well last week I set about it with a knife and made myself four short stop nets only about 5-6ft long . I have a farm I ferret that holds a lot of rabbits in some hedgerows that have fenceing up both side and a lot of holes to net, but with my new home made stop nets I can run the long nets up either side and just put the short nets through between the two fence lines this saves a lot of time and noise as I get over the fences and hell it worked a treat today. So I was just wondering what other peopl
  14. Sod rushing into a 5ft dig give them a bit of time to sort things out and it saves a lot of digging
  15. It is always the same for me net up a big spot put the ferrets to work get a few bolt then all goes quit for a bit so take the chance to sit on the box and have a coffee and roll a smoke just before I finish rolling my fag all hell lets lose and 3 bolt together so jump up kick the coffee flying drop my baccy and by time I get sorted the f###ing dog has nicked my kitkat. Mind you I wouldn't, have it any other way as it is a good laugh . Hope everyone's season is going well
  16. Well after reading the threads on here and watching what other people use I got myself a cheep catapult of good old eBay and as I was told to by members of here I shot the hell out of it.well after a while I was able to kill beer cans in the back garden on a regular basis after finding my anchor point and a way to aim (guess you would call it point and shoot). Then a little while back Longers7 put a Dan Ford catty up for sale on here and I was lucky enough to be able to buy it. Well what a bit of kit it cost my a fair bit more than my first catty but I would buy it again in a hart beet . It sh
  17. Sorry flacko not that good on the computer to put up a photo. I found the company that made them at the cla game fair like I say they aren't cheep but when you look at how long they will last and the fact I use the dogs I keep in them to earn my livelihood it isn't that much money and its the least I can do for the dogs
  18. I,ve just got new dog cabins to go in the runs they came from cab dog transit they cost a fair bit but they are bloody great and should last a life time. I bed them with straw and the dogs are warm and comfy and keep good condition through the winter
  19. I ferret on my own a fair bit with just my whippet to help he marks holes ok and helps pick up any that miss a net but the best thing he does and bugger knows how because I never trained him to do it is when I,m working a big warren he will sit above the ferret even when no rabbits are bumping. I have been watching him do this and every time I start thinking where's that bloody ferret gone I get the locater and go to where the dog is and shore enough there is the ferret below him. Do other people's dogs do this and what other handy traits have they picked up.
  20. Thank you for taking the time to help makeing things much clearer for me there is just so much to choose from didn't, want to rush out and buy the wrong thing and make myself look a right tit. Cheers Tom
  21. I have been watching this part of the forum for a while and there seams to be a helpful bunch so here goes. I am wanting to start using a catty to do a bit of hunting when out and about at work . The trouble I,m haveing is the more I read the more I get confused, there is so many different types of frames, bands, ammo and so on. So what I would like to arsk is could someone please point me in the right direction as to what would be a good starting point. I am a total novice so will be starting from scratch and don,t even know what ammo to use,but the one thing I have learnt already fom the forum
  22. I shoot a cz in 22 hornet and to be fair it has done me proud. It,s my kind of rifle nothing flashy but never missed a beat and have shot all sort of ammo through it
  23. This man seems to like his collies mate. No disrespect to your opinion but I've never had a 1st cross collie/grey that I wasn't happy with and I've had one or two in my time. If I could breed a dog as smart as that I will be a happy man
  24. Truther I am darft but not stupid I have a mate who I hunt with and he has a nice bitch he wants me to take on as she had her leg broken when hit by a car a year or two ago and after few runs she goes lame. But all I was asking was if this would be the best cross or should it have something else in the mix
  25. Thanks again for all the input to my question I can see the pro,s and con,s of trying to breed my own pup.the time and work doesn't worry me to much as I am used to haveing a few dogs about and I am now thinking that a straight grey x welsh sheepdog is the way to go.cheers Tom
