All the best dogs I've kept have all been bred different to each other, The top three I've had were a 1st cross collie/grey a bull/grey saluki/grey and a whippet/collie/grey/saluki/bull (can't remember %ages). The worst two were a deerhound/grey x collie/grey a collie/grey x bedlington/grey. And a range of mediocre dogs. The thing is if I was looking for a pup I would go for a pup bred the same as any of the ones mentioned because all the dogs I've had came from decent enough parents it was. Its just the way it goes, we aren't using machines so some are always going to be better than others.

I remember speaking to a knowledgeable guy who told me that 99% of the time you can buy better lurcher pups than you can breed yourself.

Only thing I can add to advise already mentioned is when/if she is already coming towards you of her own accord (whether its inside or out) is to call her and encourage her to you, just to confirm the correct response to the recall command.
And best of luck, and good on you for taking on a rescue dog!

Years ago I had a first cross collie greyhound and although she wasn't great at killing foxes, she would hunt them up and hassle them till they dropped in on a regular basis. for that reason alone she was far more use as a terrier mans lurcher than a big strong bull cross

ah. so chapman is to terriers the same as hancock is to lurchers. It seems a shame having read about him and he was obviously dedicated to working them.. then again pups out of rosette winners unfortunately make the better pension plan than sticking to hunt service haha

Was just wondering when and why he went from working his dogs to breeding just show stuff. From what ive read his russells were amongst the best.... And does anybody work his stuff now? Cheers

Make sure you put a bale or something on and silage bale spikes that are about... when the farmers leave them down they are about the same height as a lurchers chest, and always seem to be left at the worst places...

Unless you have loads of permission i'd try a lurcher. I go out with a pack of harriers as much fun as it is, its a far less stressful to walk the same land with a couple of lurchers and do the same job in a different way

Make sure you take the supermarket name off it. They charge £300 for a trolley.

To be fair to the guy, I always thought you gifted pups to your mates that you know will look after/do right by the dog. When it comes to strangers then a few quid might help it goes to someone whos actually thought about it and not just sent a few messages whilst pissed up and then can't/won't back down. AkA messers.....

A keeper by me recently shot a fox with hardly any teeth (I reckon a mishap with a snare)?. Its mouth was healed and it was a big healthy fella.

Had a couple of white moles over the years, and my old head keeper when I was a young 'un shot a fox that was nearly as brown as an otter, but I have never heard of a white fox.... tidy darts!

Back in the good old days when I was a keeper, I used to bait a small woods with rabbit guts, or pheasants (after breasting). Then wait till the hard weather comes in and I would fill my boots with terrier work. If you got no earths dig some decent artificials

Ive got one in my shed gathering dust.... tried it a few times bolted feck all, yours for free just come and get it!
P.s. Its a bit dented from rat-free induced rages!

I have a young deaf Russell which I am hoping to enter end of this season. I do reckon being deaf makes him quite jumpy, as he quite of jumps out of his skin if I sneak up on him and put my hand on him, that said if/when he goes down a tube stinking of fox he should be expecting trouble!

I know a couple of huntsmen who keep they're own terriers but usually get a couple of hand lads to dig his they're terriers. No offence, but do you find it affects the hounds marking if you pull them off marks everytime?

It was 3am on a Monday morning. So it wouldn't have been real busy. The trouble is there a number of packs, registered and private/pirate in our area, so locating the correct huntsman would have taken some doing. I was there when the whole of the local mounted pack crossed the A55 about 11 am on a Saturday morning, they stopped the road no bother, no collisions or casualties. I believe the plod tasered a sheep not so long ago in the same area.
