  1. Keeping a dog in a run makes no difference at all under the proposed new law. If it bites someone the owner has still commited an offence. Why would someone tresspass into a run containing a dog? Well, we all know dogs get stolen, particularly working ones. Some farms have guard dogs because theft from farms costs more than 52 million a year, disrupts business and tresspassers can turn violent when disturbed. If you have been hurt by a dog in a public place, like a road, then you should have reported it as that would have been covered by existing law.
  2. The proposed new law covers barking towards tresspassers, that the tresspasser thinks is 'aggresive', rather than just random yapping. The Telegraph article goes into more detail.
  3. Hello As most of you may know changes are currently going through parliment that would change the law relating to "out of control" dogs. "Out of Control" includes barking and jumping up as well as biting. The change would extend the law to cover private property, the only exemption being inside dwellings. So under the new law a dog barking at someone, even if they were breaking into a shed, would mean the owner was commiting an offence. I do not expect you to take the word of an internet loon so here is a link to an article on the Telegraph website. http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/poli
  4. Could you tell me the approximate size please? Do you happen to know if it is the same as a larsen mate?
  5. precious , every now and then a gem Darling, I could not afford to give them gems.
  6. I have his "Trap making step by step" which gives a design for a pigeon trap that is for feral pigeons and described as only capable of catching wood pigeons occasionally. I mentioned a ladder trap specifically as an old boy I was talking to said he used to catch woodies in a similar style trap. I was a bit surprised at this as I had perviously heard that they were very cautious about entering cages. While they certainly know what corn is from nearby fields I am cautious about scattering it on my sward incase it starts to grow.
  7. I have some grass paddocks that attract woodies at certain times of year. They are after the clover. I would like to know if there are legal and effective wood pigeon traps. Would a ladder trap work? Is it legal to bait for woodies? If so would frozen maize work? Thanks.
  8. Hello all, I have got a pair of canaries that I have been giving small pieces of Dandelion to. They seem very fond of it. Do I need to keep them limited to two thumb sized pieces or can I give them more without trouble.
  9. Have you seen this weeks Countryman's weekly? There is a suggestion that fat/cornflake mix should be fed to rats for a few weeks out in the open to make them easier to shoot. Try explaining that to the landowner.
  10. Hello all, I was after some Canary conditioning seed last week. It was surprisingly difficult to get hold of, I had to try several pet shops and stalls. Evenually I found a shop that stocked it, as a twenty kilo bag. That was far more than I needed but the shopkeeper agreed to split it if I took six kilos. That was still alot for me but I said yes. It seemed okay when I bought it and I split it between an empty Christmas sweet tin and a snap-top plastic bucket for storage. Today it was full of little insects. Both containers of conditioning seed were the same. The insects are small and
  11. If the rat keeps taking food out of the poultry feeder could you put rat posion into the feeder instead of chicken food? (Obviously you would need to confine your animals in such a way they could not get to the posioned feeder, clean the feeder throughly before refilling with chicken food and so on) I am also curious to know how you sure there is only one rat.
  12. I always set the tunnels at the bottom of trees on the shoot too mate, and never fail to catch..... Thanks for your replies. That sounds like a good method but I am cautious about using traps on the ground in this case. I know they need to be set in tunnels but the tree in question is in area where my mother's animals have access. Including in-to-everything-pain-in the-bum long necked geese and a large in-to-everything-pain-in the-bum digging dog. There is also another tree where squrriels are causing a problem, but that is in a boundary hedge of a cattle grazed field. I am hoping if I
  13. So far the peanut butter is still untouched. Which is why I was wondering if it needed changing periodically.
  14. As the birds have finished nesting now the box I made had pop holes on opposite sides for access rather than top access. Are the squrriels still likely to investigate with it being fairly open? Good idea about the nut bait. This year's Walnuts are not quite ripe enough even for squrriels, but I colud nip to Tescos or scour the area for a missed green hazel nut.
  15. Here's my tu'pennworth Middle English ferret (or furet) comes from Middle French furet, earlier fuiret, an alteration of fuiron, which ultimately goes back to Latin for 'little thief'. As in little [poultry] thief.
  16. I've made a fake nest box with a fenn trap in it to try to protect my mother's walnut tree. I have hung the box from a bough of the tree to keep it out of the way of her various animals, using four anchoring points so it does not sway around in the wind a lot. I have also hung a bird peanut feeder underneath to give the squrriels something to investigate. The trap itself is baited with a pat of peanut buttter. Unfortunately the day after I set the trap the squrriels started stripping the local hazel trees, so I guess they will not be intrested in anything else for a few days. My question i
  17. Hi guys, Anyone got a copy of "rabbit snaring the professional way" by Glen Waters for sale and/or a DVD about shotguns, particularly covering cleaning/maintenance. Thanks.
  18. I think he has ordered some "trip-traps" from somewhere. So I'll wait until he has had ago with those. Personally I think your right and sticky is the way to go.
  19. Thanks for the reply. Those first ones look like the ones he has got.
  20. My brother has got mice in his house. He caught a glimpse of one the other day and rushed out and got some cheap wire and plastic 'little nipper' style traps. Ever since the mice have been robbing these traps, but without triggering them. He has seen one again since and apparently they are very small mice, but he does not know what kind. Can anyone suggest a particular trap or method suitiable for catching small, light mice? Thanks.
  21. i wouldn,t believe all you read, covering properly is correct , but leaving it open for too long is shite Thanks guys. It is light soil and while I can find tunnels eventually I find it hard to follow them as my screwdriver goes in so easily. So I usually have to dig about a bit to make a hole in the right place. The holes end up a little bit too big. Obviously it would be best if the holes were exactly right. But when they are not I have repacked the sides with soil. Could I also cover small gaps between the ends of the traps and the edge of the holes with long grass?
  22. Hi all, I have been setting tunnel traps from 'Flat Pack' for moles. Unfortunately the moles seem to fill them with soil rather than set them off. Any tips as to where I might be going wrong? Ta.
  23. As I never seem to have enough I am planning on building some more poultry sheds. Starting with a night ark for ducks and a mobile banty house and run to clear the veg patch. Does anyone have a good source of plans they are willing to share? Thanks.
