can easily be done. 1/4 collie is a good place to start. not as sensitive as a half cross and a little more forgiving of mistakes. you may have to adapt your training methods from what you have had before, especially if its gundogs etc. as a true working lurcher needs to be able to think far more for itself at times. At the end of the day what you talk about is basic obedience and that should be the starting point for the training of any dog spot on regards 1/4 and 1x, 1/4 collie will be a good dog to learn with . Of all my dogs ive had, i would say my 3/8 bull 5/8 grey Tod ,

Which is all well and good, but how do you ACTUALLY train this? If i took your dogs, beat a hare past them, slipped them and after 10/20 yards when they were right on it, you could call 'YAK' and they would about turn and trot back? It's not an argument, it's a conversation. From very young pup after all the retrieving games are finished, start throwing the dummy long distances, then call the pup back halfway through.Gradually shorten the didtance to less than 20 yds.Now try it with a second person, standing 100 yds from you send the pup and recall after 50yds,then shorten the distance to

Not wanting to get into an argument .Basically my pups/dogs can run, jump, chase, swim and piss about as much as they like and enjoy things .However I`m in charge when the hunt is on and it`s as simple as that. Some pups that i have had have went to friends and they were delighted with the pups ,but ? i DO not think i expect 2 much from a well trained dog.

not saying this about all collies just some, and its when i hear somthing like the above calling the dog of a chase i think thats when 2 much brains can be a fault in a lurcher ,anyway used 2 go out with lad that ran collie/greys,the first few slips the dog would run brill and then half hearted only running halfway down the beam if he thought the rabbit was going trough the hedge he,d pull up 50yds before ,this used realy do the guys head as this dog could be a handy dog and do the numbers ,i know all collies are not like this, just when i read the above about calling of a chase ,their no were i

At 4 months I`d keep the pup indoors ,for training ,far to many distractions with scent and visual stimulation ,by training outside.Keep the game simple indoors and put the toy away when the pup starts to loose interest.Good luck. And ! your advice for the orig poster is ?.

I prefer half collie/greyhound pups at 8 weeks old But on some occasions a quarter collie /greyhound is required and expect them to obey all the, basic commands and act upon a series of arm/whistle signals All my dogs, respond to command when told to abandon a chase and that is a great quality. We also have a greyhound :icon_eek:that was rescued as a young pup ,not ideal by any means but suitable 4 some on here.

IMO,starting a pup on rabbits at 8 months is 2 early. If you do decide to continue? .If ,lamping :you could shoot the close/squatters with an air rifle then slip the dog. But, beware the first few unfruitful runs, can ruin a pup and cause it to open up.

23" max however ,my money is on 20".

Lurcher pissing on front legs, when cocking leg
BIG ZOOK replied to bobslurchers's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
Had the same problem The fooker has access to over 3 acres of land and is roaming free for at least 15 hrs per day .But he still does piss on his leg .Baby wipes 4 us. -
Great pics mate ,glad to see the dogs out and about, enjoying things .

Deffo whippet in that dog .That my friend is a fine lookng pup, strong legs and back.No way is it an italian greyhound .The only bother i have had with whippets is that ,they have so much ,courage, they can tear, injure themselves and still carry on.Next day is a different story.Great pup.BUT if that picture,is 13" high and 1 yr old then i`m stumped, going off the feet..

No way can i see collie in him .I have seen nearly pure greyhounds with a similar ear carridge. He sure looks like a stuborn bugger though .

Look A mediocre dog can catch hares in the lamp, dogs that would not stand a hope in hell of catching them by day .You know it and so does the rest of the hunting forum. -

Got a bad head son?. -
Far too many lazy lampers .If you are local then walk .If you are a visitor then ,return home ,at the same time as the locals are going to work .

BIG ZOOK replied to suffolkpoacher's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
Depending on the time of the year A decent collie or alsation could catch a decent amount of hares,on the lamp.Lamped hares = a big NO SHOW in my books. But if you enjoy the advantage you have, against a lamped hare then ,enjoy. -

BIG ZOOK replied to dawntreader's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
OPEN,next doors ,poultry coop then stand back and observe. What section of the wildlife officers manual is that in........... Section 1 Things not to do ?. NOW,you sound like a real clever bloke. You still on here you filthy c**t? FTB NOW,you sound like a real clever bloke. I'm no Albert Einstein, that I will give you. But at least I have morals and principles and can walk with my head held high. Your soul purpose in life is to inflict misery on people who even you know are not to blame for their actions. You are filth...
