  1. I give the birds a week or so to settle, feeding in their usual feeders, topping up at the times i intend to hand feed, whistling as i go. This gets them used to you coming in at certain times of the day and gives you an idea of food intake. Then I'll start feeding on the ground in a trail, letting the feeders run out. Then it's just a case of fine tuning the quantity of food to keep them sharp. It's all a balancing act to get them on the hand feed before they are getting out of the pen in numbers but still making sure they don't get stressed in the first few days in the pen. The younger you c
  2. Unfortunately they're still out there though. I was lucky and had 2 top class old school keepers who taught me respect for the countryside and a keepers place in it. I have heard and seen some horror stories and while there is a queue of lads desperate to take the jobs i don't think things will change.
  3. Trans k9 used to make a cracking set up, 5ft by 2 and a half ft insulated box with a 5 by 8 galv run. Virtually indestructible, easy to clean and very well thought out. They come up on ebay from time to time, which is where i got mine. Paid £1200 for a 4 kennel setup and would be gutted if i had to part with them. Wouldn't go back to timber after having these
  4. Good call Dan. I have always found tetsol pretty effective, but the first sign of the yellow frothies they get put on it. As with all these things acting quickly is the key
  5. Did mine in 2008 after years of tree climbing. To be honest its pretty easy physically, the equipment is streets ahead of tree climbing kit especially as i was used to climbing on a prussic and nothing is left to chance with the safety side of things. As a level one you will always need a level three with you to rig until you've completed your hours. After all the paperwork you'll probably be desperate to get on the ropes but i did find the course very interesting and certainly opened my eyes to the risks most arboriculturists take on a daily basis. I only ever did one job which just covere
  6. Got a navara d22 single cab on a 53 plate. Took the back off as it had rotted out and started to put flatbed on, about 90% complete. Also welded several patches on chassis. I got offered a new job meaning a big house move hence the project took a back seat. Truck is pretty rough around the edges but engine and gearbox is good as gold. MOT'd till june. Looking for around the £1100 mark, pm if interested (ps in midlands)
  7. Can anyone recommend a decent vets in the midlands pls, one with a sensible attitude to working dogs. I've just moved down to worcestershire and am struggling! I have terriers, a lurcher and spaniels Thanks lads
  8. About 300 yards of sewelling in 4 bundles, free to collector in county Durham. Pm for details. Atb, LD
  9. Forgot to say, the bitch has been dogging in for me the last few weeks too (under very tight control)
  10. Hi mate. I have recently been given a two year old springer bitch with the same problem. I'd not had her long when she took off after a group of poults . Corected her for that as best as I could after the event, then five minutes later she was away after a hare, deaf to my curses. A chat with the shepherd later and she was fitted with a pac electric collar, dial turned to full and led away into the path of temptation. As predicted she ran straight in on the poults, ignoring the whistle so I gave her one good clout of the collar. She went down on her belly, whimpered then ran straight bac
  11. f**k me, if we can't talk about this on a forum like this, how is it ever going to get sorted out. All I know is that the media have a hold of something and if we can't get our house in order we'll all be out of our homes and wondering what the f**k happened to our way of life. We all know BoP's are a big problem and it is very frustrating to see some sort of balance needs to be restored in some species (buzzards especially with me). However, anyone guilty of complete intolerance doesn't deserve to call themselves a keeper! Every dead bird of prey found on a shooting estate is another na
  12. I'll have about 1000 pheasant eggs spare in south west Scotland towards the end of the week. If anyone's interested in some or all of them then pm and make an offer cos I'd hate to see them go to waste. Cheers
